Just snapped a KMC EL 11 speed chain, i never snap chains, don't know if it was a bad shift or something, riveting of the pin failed, pin was nowhere to be seen. Unlucky?

Shit happens, I've snapped Shimano, SRAM and KMC.

KMC can snap, but I've had all of one compared to half a dozen SRAM snaps. I know it's "people I know" but, 😀 a lot people I know have moved to KMC and swear by them for lack of snapping.

That said I don't know about the SL/EL stuff. I use regular sturdy X10-93 chains which are rated "extremely durable" by KMC vs the SL/EL which are less durable rating.

Shimano - only come across a few who've had them and the most trail stop faffing with broken chains has been Shimano. Not that they snap more, just that they're a right faff with the stupid pin things and directional chains.

Other thing is you're running 11 speed, and thinner chain and all that.

Only ever snapped one shimano, at the silly joining pin, still use shimano chains, just join them using a quick link now, and have zero problems*...

*of course I've now jinxed that...

Not snapped my KMC, maybe because I have twiglets for legs. Mate snapped the powerlink on about the third ride though.

The EL is the one with all the daft holes in the plates, isn't it? I like KMC but I had one of those for 9 speed and it was very easy to damage, I killed it completely doing 10UTB in the mud- every time it chainsucked it bent the links. All to save half a gram. I like the 93s, because they're made of steel not holes.

If chains are fitted properly they shouldn't break from "rider power" considering most derailleur chains are rated as having a breaking strain of 4000nm?

The most common causes are poor fitting (damaged chain tool pin or poor technique using tool), damaged drivetrain (twisted chainring tooth opening up the chain plates) or in the longer term corrosion

I'd typically ditch any special joining pins when fitting a new chain and use a quick-link connector because you remove the risk of flaring the outer plate which can easily happen when using a joining pin, even with experience and a good quality chain tool
