Just had my new X9 Type 2 rear mech arrive. Just been looking at it - I understand the cage lock, in that you push the cage forward and press the lock button.
However, what I don't get is the clutch aspect and how/what stops the cage flapping out - other than cage lock button, I don't see how it's differant to a non Type 2 mech ie, my existing X9 rear mech!
Please explain.....
If it's anything like the Shimano one, it engages a big springy thing that pushes the mech back tighter than a normal mech.

What he said, it kind of locks the mech out so it can't flap upwards.
Watching the video it seems to make the rear mech far worse - why would you put it forward to let the chain go slack? Then when he springs it back it appears to be the same as any other rear mech...so what is the advantage of it?
to fit/remove chain which would be utter PITA without it...
The switch just increases the tension, nothing more complicated than that.

Ok - so I get the cage lock button/concept, for locking the cage forward when removing the wheel (and also know this is ONLY for when removing the rear wheel!).
But having played around with the mech (unfitted) last night, I still don't get just what the clutch aspect is, and how it lessens chain slap through cage movement...
Essentially the clutch just adds one-way friction to the cage rotation - I.e. the lower cage doesn't spring forwards (anticlockwise if looking from drive side) as readily, but it will still spring backwards to maintain chain tension. It can still move to allow you to change gear or if the suspension compresses but it has to overcome more friction.
