Hi, I finally decided to re-route my brakes so that the hoses pass on the correct side of the headtube.. a bit OCD maybe but it has been irritating me for a year now!  Anyway I've already cocked it up as have realised that the rear hose is not long enough for this and is also the new stealth-a-majig type fitting.  So two questions:

It says I can not re-use the olive and barb.  Is this because the olive will have been compressed despite being the new design?  If so does that mean you can never disconnect then reconnect a brake lever without a new olive?  New olive/barb kit is a rip off 15 quid.  I have a load of standard avid olives but it sounds like I can't use these 🙁

I'm sadly going to need a new longer hose.  These seem to be £30 which include the caliper end connector.  Is there any way to do this on a budget using 3rd party hose and re-using the existing connector or is that impossible?

Had no idea this little aesthetic fix was going to take half a day and cost me £45 or I would never had bothered.. thats almost enough to bin the brake and buy shimano! The curse of an over keen fettler! 🙂

Olives are not reusable as a rule, the inserts can generally be reused. The caliper connector is crimped and cannot be reused.

As a 3rd party alternative, there is the option of a Jagwire Pro hose and associated Quick-Fit adaptors - around £45 for both on ebay, but you get 2x the hose length and connectors, so effectively half price.

Thanks for the info.  Looks like superstar have hose plus fittings for under £20 and enough for two brakes.  Unfortunately does not look like they have SRAM Guide fittings :/

I have a fair few times. But only Shimano, I think.

Last time, I swapped levers from one bike to the other and neither needed new hardware. Or bleeding, for that matter.

If you need a longer hose you're doing it wrong. The hose should pass on the same side of the headtube that the lever is on, which is the shortest possible route.

Interesting, almost all bikes I see have all cables passing in front of the headtube.  The setup on my bike was a mixture of both types so looked a total mess.

Only an absolute savage would do this.

If it's the red olive, I don't think you can re-use, the end gets crushed against the hose, so you won't be able to re-fit it. The threaded barb will be reusable. You can buy 5 for £15 though, so it's not too expensive.
