Is it as bad as some say?
Am considering a bike that comes with the new 11s stuff. The 10s stuff I've tried felt quite good, I hear it can break and warranty is poor.
Can't speak for the 11s, but the 10s SRAM Red on my roadie has been faultless in 4 yrs
The lads who ride SRAM in our club don't seem to have any issues. The top end stuff is very nice to use. The only issue I know of is the bottom brackets on the lower end stuff are made of cheese.
Long term Red user (mechanical) on last 3 bikes and I've never had any issues whatsoever. Current setup on my R5 is this years Red and it's bloody excellent.
Some ppl find it take a bit of time getting used to the shifting but this can be down to the fact it's different to what there used to if they have been using shimano. Personally I prefer shiman, it feel nice in the hand for me. The shimano set up is easier especially the front shift plus you get proper trim on shimano.
I wouldn't let it put you of buying a bike if it's at the rite price. But if I had to use it in wouldn't want to use the cheap sram stuff.
I've got Apex on my roadie, and prefer Shimano. The shifting is a lot quicker on Shimano as there's less lever travel required to move to a lower cog on the cassette. I'll be changing back to Shimano when I get the chance / can be bothered to buy some
Thanks all. It'd be on a new Supersix, as an alternative to 105, which I would flog as I've got a nice light 9s Csmpag set up (that would be worth **** all to sell I imagine).
i had a red groupset on my road bike for 4 years never got on with it.now got 11 speed dura ace much prefer it
I've been a life long dura ace fan but the last Bike I swapped to 10 speed sram red.
I really like the shape and feel of the shifters and quality of shift vs the 7800 and 7900.
I've been using Ultegra for quite a few years and have just bought a new bike with Rival on it.
Soon got used to the different style of changing and its been precise and quiet.
The hoods seem smaller than Ultegra but no palm ache.
Finish is not up to Ultegra standard but i think the overall weight for the groupset is lower.Brakes work perfectly well.
But after just 300 mile the bottom bracket has some play.I'll be contacting a Scott dealer to try and get it sorted under warranty.
I could have had the same bike but with an Ultegra groupset for £200 more and with hindsight i should have bought that.
Nearly 6000 miles on 10 speed force. I really like it. Only grumbles, can be slow to change at front (more down to frame design and crap gun king up cable I think than the mech) and when I'm really tired and try to shift down into a gear I don't have it will actually shift you UP a gear making life worse.....because one click is up and two down, if there isn't another cog it'll click once then shift up...if that makes sense...
Edit - had 2 chains and one cassette in that time.
6000km (most of that this year) on sram RED YELLOW tour special group, not even had to change a cable, faultless
Still running 2009 Red on my Orca - I changed the front mech to the new yaw one, which is much better than the flimsy original. Apart from that, no issues at all. I've got Rival on the 2nd road bike which is getting upgraded to 10-speed Red using some barely used 2nd hand bits off a mate.
Been riding on Rival for a few years. Despite impressive light weight it's proved quite durable (apart from the BBs). Front mech was flimsy, replaced with a 105.
Still switching to Shimano on next bike though.
I've had Red and Force 10 speed on a couple of bikes for 2 years or more. Never had the slightest issue with either and love the SRAM clunk over the 105 and Ultegra I had before. I managed to trash an STI in an off, but I think that would probably have happened with Shimano too.
SRAM Force 11 on my SuperSix .. Silky smooth.
SRAM Force 10 on other bike for last 3yrs .. Also been superb.
Fitted new chainset other day & took for ride yesterday. Didn't set front mech as well as I could and chain dropped off 53t. Instead of stopping and sorting it, I tried to use cage on front mech to grab it by dropping down .. Result was chain jamming, and snapping chain, front mech and putting nice gouge in carbon chain stay ... All my own stupid lazy fault!
So looking for replacement SRAM force front mech.
Which are more expensive than shimano ..
TBH I don't think you can really go wrong with anything from the big 3 here, assuming you're not right down at the crap end. Just ride it and get on with it.
If I had > 1 bike I'd want them to be running the same make though!
Cynic-al, what groupset?
I'd be interested if a full Force 11spd Groupset with GXP 50/34 crank...
I thought the brakes were broken, but they all stop that way. Not a patch on Ultegra. shifters shift and just tale a little getting used to.
Sram red on my supersix - excellent
