Hi ive a set of wheels for my cx bike that have superstar switch ultra rear hub it said 8,9,10,11 shimano compatible (mtb I presume I always thought they were the same)

But I tried to fit my sram rival 11 speed road cassette and its just too big by a mm or so

Can I fit a shimano 11 spd cassette and will it work with the rival shifters

Very confusing as I thought It was all compatible

Cheers

Blame the roadies. 11 speed road kept 10 speed spacing and just added an extra cog. 11 speed mtb is an extra cog squeezed in the same space. Mtb cassettes work on road freehubs with a spacer but can’t see your combo working. SRAM or Shimano cassette won’t make a difference.
Will probably need a swap to a road freehub.

Although searching around it appears novatech 882 and prime r020 are the same so it might be worth 20 quid to try a road freehub on it perhaps

Should be an 11sp cassette that fits a 10s freehub.

Many thanks swanny I've not seen those and I was going to buy a spare cassette soon so that could actually save me money and make it an easier swap cheers I shall look into it

There's a 11spd 34-105 cassette cs-hg700 flavour one that's the same dimensions - £47.99 on Amazon at the moment

Chances are they will be mtb spaced and may not work well with your road shifters.

The cassette that got linked to appears to be road spacing and seems to be only the 34t that comes with a spacer to fit 10s hub if you don't use it non of the others do but then I've just read on merlin site that specifically the 34t only fits 11s freehubs so God knows

Just incase anyone else has this issue I bought a prime r020 freehub and it was a straight swap my wheel now takes 11 speed road and mtb cassettes with a spacer

Not quite correct I think.

Chances are they will be mtb spaced and may not work well with your road shifters.

MTB cassettes are actually wider than road, but the largest sprocket overhangs. That's possible with a big 34t+ gear, but a 25t would hit the spokes on some wheels. So the mounting splines of an 11s MTB cassette are the same size as a 10s one, but the cassette is actually wider. Which is why those non-series 11-34 cassettes exist, they were a fudge by shimano until GRX came out.

Road 11s is a longer freehub. But they're only wider at the teeth by 1mm. Which means if you index it to the 6th gear it's only 0.5 at each end, about a quarter turn on the barrel adjuster and not enough to be noticeable. Wiggins et.al were using MTB cassettes on their road bikes for mountain stages with no issues.
