Hello is converting from a 2x to a 1x drivetrain as simple as removing the front derailleur (leaving a redundant shifter)and swapping the chainrings to a singular narrow wide or am I missing something

Generally, yes, although it can be a little bit faffy to set up. You will probably need to play with the chainline a bit by setting up the chainring position. You want that to be sitting in a line with the middle sprocket on the cassette.
The chain may need some tension added to it by adjusting the chain length/b-screw. I've rarely had to resort to a chain guide.
