So, im eagerly awaiting my stooge gravel bastard frame to arrive and have spent the best part of this year amassing parts in preperation. Ive gone all in, sold off some of my frames/wheels to fund a dream build. As a consequence ive gone for an AXS mullet set up with hydraulic brakes.
However my new frame is post mount and as ive bought the new Rival AXS brifters complete with flat mount calipers i need to change them over to the new sram red post mount calipers i managed to pick up cheap on ebay. Thing is i dont have much experience with hydraulics and the calipers seem to have different fittings (looks like i need a 90 degree bend on the hose into the red caliper).
Can anybody shine any light on this one? I dont really want to go down the flat mount adaptor route as the red calipers are silver so match the build better.
thanks in advance
Did you find an answer to this? I'm interested.
No replies unfortunately, cant find much info online either. Considering the jagwire pro hydro quick connectors but not sure if it will work.
I seem to recall the red ones used a "banjo'd" hose fitting whereas the Force are an inline one.
The flat mount ones are like my Force AXS calipers
Yes the red calipers I want to use are post mount with the banjo so just need to work out what part I need to use in order to replace the rival flat mount caliper
You need a whole new brake hose.
SRAM early gen disc calipers were 1 piece with a banjo fitting. They had problems with pad retraction, and so changed the design. The latest design is 2 piece with a direct fitting. Sounds like you have latest gen Rival flat mount calipers and have bought early gen Red post mount.
Arguably the early gen 1 piece units were better in 2 ways. Firstly in theory a 1 piece is stronger. Secondly the banjo fitting allows precise hose positioning. But that’s an argument for another day!
What matters is that you shorten SRAM hoses at the lever end, not the caliper end. The caliper end has a factory crimped fitting which is specific to either the early gen banjo fitting or the later gen inline fitting.
In order to fit your new brakes, you have the pain in the arse task of changing the hose and bleeding the brakes.
Or just keep what you have and use the adapters. Not ideal or what you want from your post, but a hell of a lot simpler particularly if you are a hydraulics newbie, although to be fair either option will probably require a hose shorten and bleed. Other than finish there really isn’t too much to choose between the SRAM calipers. It’s the levers that change really and they are kind of sold as complete units. Even then the levers only really differ in finish and the number of ports they offer.
I was in the same place as you. Needed new calipers and bought pair bof Red as cheap. Guess there was a reason. Anyway they needed a banjo and my old hose had the sort of inline black ends on. Was getting to the point where I was going for new hose, 40 quid +, when a random FB post highlighted an ebay sellers selling everything needed including hoses, banjos etc for just over 20 quid. Bargain! When it all came I realised that the easiest way was to chop the old fittings off andf just use the banjos. Job done.
Aliexpress throws up banjos but they have a single diameter hole whereas the SRAM ones need to be stepped. As they were sweet FA I bought a pair to machine out. They are identical to Hope ones. Could not tell them apart. Even weighed the same. Anyway the hose kit arrived so they are in the spares box. Just looked on ebay. Now 40 + quid. but still half the price of new hoses and you get stacks of bit or gamble on just the banjos that pop up .
