just stuffed-up an slx rear mech, but seen a sram x9 on spesh; would it work with an xt 10 speed shifter?

^^ he's right, won't work. You need a 10 speed Shimano MTB mech, nowt else will work.

You need Shimano rear mech, don't think they're sprocket specific. As said above pull ratios are different.
