I think the shimano road cassettes are slightly narrower than a mtb freehub . What about the Sram? Anybody tried this?

Yes, exactly the same.
Shimano road 10 speed cassettes are 1mm narrower and include a spacer, still cross compatible though.

Yeh, I think it should come with a thin (1mm?) spacer so you should be reet.

10spd road cassettes that are 1mm narrower (some are, some aren't) are always supplied with a 1mm spacer to go onto the freehub before the cassette.
Don't worry, it WILL fit...
