I'm converting (for a friend) his 2x10 deore drive train to SRAM NX 12 speed, he's bought the group set from Evans.
When I fit the cassette, the 11t cog fits so far out that the cassette lock ring is more or less in line with the edge of the 135QR locknut, so much so that the slightly protruding hanger screws bind on the lockring. On his 10 speed cassette there is 2.75mm of clearance between the frame and the outside edge of the cassette lock ring.
Even if I file of the hanger screw protrusion, is there going to be clearance for the chain.
Is the NX cassette really wider or I must have done something wrong. There is a very thin spacer on the freehub on the outside of the large cog, which I will remove and see how much difference that makes.
thanks
The NX cassette is "standard", it should fit regular Shimano freehubs. It is interesting that there is a spacer in there, usually that only happens with road freehubs (slightly wider).
Everything will most likely fit once you remove the spacer.
It will only fit an 11 speed free hub not a 10
You will find 11sp free hubs running 10 speed cassettes will have a spacer supplied to move it out.

This is incorrect and should be ignored.

I wonder if its part of the existing 10speed cassette. As otsdr its normal for there to be a spacer on a road 11 capable free hub (eg hope Pro 4) to allow use of a sub (road) 11 speed cassette but you should only need to take it off for road 11 not mtb.
Are all the spacers (if there are any, I've not used nx cassettes) and sprockets in the right place and properly aligned?
Usual confusion of Road and MTB freehubs... 😁
There are some oddities out there like Mavic who always had a longer FH body that needed a spacer (apparently avoiding a license?) and Hope Pro4 (also Longer, Road 11 length for some reason and needs a spacer) but in general for MTB, all freehub bodies should be the same length.
So why doesn't the op's mates cassette fit? Lol
Some cassettes now include a spacer that you would need to use on a 11 spd road hub which has a wider freehub body. MTB freehub bodies have not changed but road did. Remove the spacer by the large cog and it should be fine.

It's confused about its self, it can't decide what it is.

Of course though if a 10speed cassette fits with a spacer (as opposed to having one as in integral part) a mountain 11 spd also need a spacer as the freehub is "long" enough for a road 11. (for what it's worth those spacers are tiny too, much smaller than the 3mm ish the op suggests)
