Just wondering if anyone has encountered this problem before.

Fairly new Guide RS taken off another bike and was working perfectly. I've had to disconnect the hose from the lever and route through a frame. I've popped a new barb and connector on and attached back the lever, but now the lever is stuck solid and won't move.

It feels like there's a blockage or something stopping the fluid from entering the hose? I've triple checked the connector and I can't see any obstructions. I've just got a bleed kit, so I can try that.

Any ideas?

Is it a sticky piston that affects some levers?

I thought about that, but it's usually down to heat though?

These have had light use, they were working on the bike I removed them from, now the lever feels locked out when I've diconnected the hose and re-attched it.

It's a possibility I suppose.

Is the lever stuck closed or open? If open (ie at full reach) I doubt its the expanding piston issue - generally this is due to heat anyway (I had this issue with mine).

I would bleed it first and if that doesn't solve it then I would be pulling it apart - its pretty basic to do - instructions all on the Sram web site.

Cheers @bgascoyne

It's stuck fully open (impossible to press, stuck solid). I'll have a look and see if I can bleed it first.

Just baffled by it as the only thing that has changed is the removal and refitting of the hose (checked the new connector 3 times and all looks fine).

Pretty sure the new levers use a system that if you take apart the lever and hose, a ball bearing sits in the hole to stop fluid escaping. Just make sure you’ve put the hose in the lever correctly and done it tight enough.

@pbooker1995

Bang on! I've just been trying to bleed it and failed. So I took the hose off again and had a look at the lever and saw that there was a spring loaded stop. The Stealth-a-Majig is supposed to press on it.

It looks like I've threaded the connecter on the wrong way around! Problem is, I think the connector has deformed because it won't go over the hose and connect the right way around. Either that, or it was the wrong fitting to begin with (it was a spare I had lying around).

Shame I can't get one for tomorrow as I've no decent bike shops near me and I really wanted to give the new bike a test this weekend!

Glad that was the issue.

I’m guessing you mean you’ve put the Red Olive on the wrong way around? Could you trim the hose and then refit if your careful with getting it out?

Yeah it's the red olive. Thing is it just doesn't fit over the hose the other way though. I've either deformed it (looking at it, it doesn't seem crushed), or it was the wrong one to begin with.

I've just assumed it was the right one because it was red!

The red olive is the correct olive. They have a reverse thread and should thread on over the insert so they fit flush together. Maybe try taking the olive off and loosening off the insert. Sometimes you can tighten these into the hose too much and they ,are the hose bulge making it tricky to get the olive fitted.

Yeah, I've threaded the olive on (reverse thread), but upside down. I've probably compressed it too much as I've filed it down and it still won't go over the hose/barb to reach the threads.

Ah well, not to worry as I've got a set of Shimano 4 pots on the way to try. Best not stuff that installation up 🙂

Edit*
I've filed away a bit of the olive and managed to get it over the barb/hose and installed it! Lever working again now, so just need to give it a bleed and it'll do till next week 🙂

Thanks for the help on this!

I've just done the piston replacement on my older RS's - did the rear last year when it stuck in the heat, front was OK, but a month or so ago, the front started dragging after the bike was stood in the sun.

Straight forward, including bleed. Only tricky bit was removing the cir-clip.

I went through all the faff of getting it working and bled, just so I can go for my first ride on the shiny new frame on Sunday 🙂

Guides will be coming off and being replaced with Shimano 4 pots. The rear Guide hose is too short anyway and only just fits.

It was really bugging me though! I hadn't realised you could thread them olive on the wrong way around. I had to file it down and tap it over the barb just to get it to screw back on the correct way.

Had a few Guides and still got Level TL and TLM on other bikes, but not had the sticky pistons yet... I've said it now lol.
