Has anyone dealt with fixing reach adjusters on SRAM Guides?
I’ve got a set of oldish Guide Rs that came on a second hand bike. They’re not in the best condition but work well enough apart from the reach adjusters which don’t adjust.
The levers are set at full extension from the bar and screwing the adjusters all the way in or out (to the point of unscrewing them off) makes no difference.
I’ve read about using a small allen key inserted into a hex inside the adjuster but these don’t have a hex. A lever strip is a bit daunting especially as I don’t know what to look for.
Any suggestions? Ta.
Basically you've got a small spring that does the lever adjustment. If that's not right, then it won't work.
But for both to fail in the same way, at the same time, well that would surprise me.
You've got a little rubber bung on the lever, this comes out and you've got a Torx T9 (or T8) grub screw that comes out and lets you remove the retension pin that holds the lever to the master. You can then take it off and reposition your spring if needed. It's easier than it sounds but can be fiddle as you have the spring on one side and a small washer on the other and you need all bits aligned.
mine did this and it was an easy fix acutally.
i dont really know how to describe this but:
if you look at the lever there is a cam/lever between the master cylinder plunger and lever blade and the adjuster sits into a small hole/depression this cam. when you pull the lever thre cam puts pressure on the adjuster and the adjuster needle/pointy bit gets stuck in the depression in the cam.
hold the cam in place with your finger and press the brake lever blade (edit - away from teh bars if i remember right) so the adjuster needle comes free of teh cam. this frees up the adjuster to use. youll need to do this every time you adjust after you pull the brake.
its yet another crap SRAM design in the history of SRAM crap.
Is the lever moving in and out when you turn the adjuster?
The adjuster is a 2 part bolt, it could be that the thread lock has come unstuck. I've had this a couple of times. Strip the lever down and just apply some thread lock to the adjuster and reassemble and you should be go to go.
Thanks everyone. The smallest Torx bit I have is T10 so I’ve not been able to take the lever blade off. I sprayed a little GT85 into the cam and put some thread lock into the adjuster nob, left it overnight and this morning it’s now working.
