My rear brake no longer has any power. The brake reaches the bite point, then feels like it its hit some internal hard stop. No matter how hard I squeeze there is no real brake action. Pad only at about 1/2 wear.
Could it be a leak of fluid? I've not noticed any leaks, but not been looking specifically.
Any other suggestions?
TIA
If you haven't already, take the pads out and check to see if there is a 'lip' on the outer edge of the pad.
As the pads are half worn the 'lips' will touch stopping the rest of the pad contacting the disc.
You can file the lip off but it will happen again.
What it means is the caliper is slightly too high on the mounts. If there are any flat washers under the caliper, take them away, if not the only thing would be to remove material from the mount.
I'm guessing its a road bike, so if the brakes are flat mount you can't remove any material.
Failing that the brake could have air in the system and only a bleed will fix it.
Can't help with that as I've no experience with SRAM road hydro's. Their website should help there.
I had my front do something like this was the shifter hitting the bar pushed pads in and pumped the lever a few times to reset them.
The pads look fine, like i say partially worn, but in good order other than that. I took them out yesterday thinking I'd discover the cause, but they look fine. Took the opportunity to wizz the pistons out a bit, and cleaned the outer surfaces, with the pinkbike floss method. Thinking perhaps that they were stuck, not retracting etc. But nothing helps.
is the lever travel normal or do they pull to the bars?
check the spring between the pads....
I just switched some out and the spring was stopping pad to disc contact. Symptoms were brakes felt fine but had very little power
Nope, the level stops well before hitting the bars. It's weird, as it feels like your just getting to the modulation point, but then it pretty much stops dead.
The spring/pads all look like they are set up correctly.
Thinking about it, there is another issues. There was a lot of slack in the lever operation before reaching any resistance of the cylinder. When i say slack i mean no resistance whatsoever. I was never sure if this was meant to be like it or not as never ridden with hydror's before. Perhaps that was an indication of something more sinister going on.
I had an issue with my Rival hydro rear brake, basically the lever felt loose/floppy for the first few cm of lever pull, them got to the bite point and was very low on power.
I bled the brake several times which improved things, although the issue still returns briefly and I explicably from time to time. I'd heard about an issue with the master cylinder piston swelling and sticking, but thought this was a hot ambient temperature issue, so who knows...
Turns out its a known failure. Bike shop took one look, and said sram would replace.
Out of interest, also found this, showing the exact problem...
Ta for everyone's input.
