Afternoon folks,
I'll get it out of the way first - im a twunt.
Thought I'd change the gear cable today on my Force CX1. Rather than spending 10 seconds doing a quick How To search online I just started undoing screws here there and everywhere (wasn't immediately obvious where the cable went). I managed to unscrew what I guess was some sort of brake fluid reseviour and subsequently swore a lot....
I mopped up the mess and screwed it all back together. Strange thing is, brake performance is still fine??!! Was expecting it to be pants and need a proper bleed? What's going on?!
I'd guess you've lost fluid from the reservoir, rather than from the part of the system that gets pressurised. Probably best if you find the instructions and get it topped up before you turn the bike upside down and get any air that's now in the reservoir into the rest of the system (probably as simple as fitting a syringe into the lever bleed port, and sucking any air out).
Thanks Coatesy, sounds about right.
What purpose does the reservoir play? I've always avoided all things hydraulic... I don't seem to get one with them very well!
Cheers
Essentially, it's just a store for fluid to compensate for the extra required when your pads wear and the pistons move further out, or to allow the fluid space to expand when it heats up after prolonged braking.Air will sit harmlessly at the top of that reservoir until you run low as your pads wear, or the bike gets tilted too far, at which point it'll get into the pressured part of the system and affect your braking.
Genius, thank you
