So... finished a XCM race in the Alps on a very clean and well serviced Trek Procal 9.8sl. Next day cycling to the shops in chamonix, and the chain snaps.

Over the handlebars I go, land on my head, then my shoulder and wrist. Broken wrist, stage 3 seperated shoulder etc, etc.

Now, this chain has done maybe 500k maximum, should it really be snapping?

Has SRAM gone too far on the Eagle, and made this chain too thin?

It scares me to think if this chain had snapped the previous day at 40km!

(I will post a pic of snapped chain when on laptop).

Ouch!  Best wishes with the recovery.  I've been having issues with mine too.  Bought a new bike in Oct'17 with GX 12spd, once it bedded in I was impressed with it, though I managed to bend a tooth on the 5th gear of the cassette, no idea how.

The last few months have been a different story.  Ripped a jockey wheel off on Snowdon writing off a mech (just pedalling along), got a replacement (and they were kind enough to send me a warranty replacement too), and that has only lasted a couple of months before looking bent and mis-shifting.  Hanger is straight.  The rear mech keeps hooking up and locking, narrowly avoided coming off on several occasions.  I think if I hadn't stopped pedalling on each occasion it would have written off another mech/chain.

I'm putting the warranty replacement mech on now but next time anything goes I'll be getting rid of the lot.  Back to shimano for me soon I think!

Apparently Eagle is very sensitive to correct B-screw adjustment so make sure you check it with the tool if you didn’t fit it yourself! Mine’s been great so far although not done mega miles on it yet.

"too thin?"

Nope.

Do a google search and you will see pretty much any speed chain can break. Don't draw any conclusions because it happened to you once.

This is like the "my carbon frame broke = every other carbon frame will break too" etc.

Yep. Exactly like the carbon analogy. Most likely is a setup issue that went unnoticed or possibly a botched chain cutting job again from setup.

Op says in the title that the chain sheared, which (to me anyway) implies a different failure mode to the way chains usually fail. If it just failed in the usual way then yep that's just what happens sometimes ,regardless of chain type.

If it failed ina different way then that could be interesting, op post some picture of the failed link

X01 or GX chain? Snapped an X01 chain 4 times in 200 miles, all through sheared pins, then done 500 miles fine on the gx chain. That said there's plenty of people putting down double the wattage as me on X01 chains so I'm sure I just got a dodgy one.

According to Strava I have done over 2000km on the XO1 drivetrain that was on my bike from day one. I replaced the chain 2 weeks ago as it’s almost reached the 0.7% wear point. I would normally be well into my 2nd or even 3rd chain by now

Whats the normal way? I’ve had chains go in several different ways over the years
