Dear all,

i have just bought a rear wheel that happens to have a SRAM freewheel

1) I can take this off and replace with a shimano on ( I presume ... I am assumong the hubs ate the same, just the free wheel body is different) For this to work, i have to have a spare freewheel body .. which I think I have

2) I can put on a Sram cassette ( which will cost money).  Will a SRAM cassette 10-46 work with a shimano rear derailleur etc?

Ta

1) Yes with the relevant one that matches the hub

2) SRAM do 10-42 Shimano 11-46 (the 10-42 is a wider range AFAIK)

You can mix and match 11sp

Also for the SRAM look at GX, the price is close to XT, it's made of steel and last longer so is cheaper overall.

Freehub is certainly available then.  If you stay with SRAM, be cautious of drive side endcaps.  They're subtly different in length than for Shimano and if confused will leave you with a jammed freehub.  Also unclear is that when attaching a cassette to the XD freehub you need to use copious grease on the threads to prevent welding the two together, and that you need to leave the endcap off until the cassette is fitted (and remove before trying to remove the cassette) because otherwise your locking tool won't properly engage and you may destroy the cassette.

I'd second Mike that the XG1150 'GX' cassette is a better option than an M8000 XT in all respects except possibly price, especially if you already have the freehub to fit it.  It's lighter, stronger, tougher and wider range, and as a bonus will allow a smaller front ring saving yet more weight.  There will be no issue at all using Shimano shifter and mech if that is your preference.

Anti seize not grease

I've seen both.  My last cassette came with what looked like the blue grease Hope use (usually quoted as XHP222) liberally coated around the fitting.  I've used copper slip and marine grease (not at the same time!)

So long as whatever you use is going to stay put and not cause problems between steel and all I'm not sure it's actually important?  The main thing is that unless you were building a fat bike that was going to do beach rides it's not something you'd normally be doing - especially if you'd been told to torque it, and it's a well known cause of destroyed XD cassettes that SRAM were originally warrantying for.

Definitely *not* carbon paste though! 😀
