Replacing the drive side bearing on my TT bike and the new bearing I have is a few microns too wide - crankset back in fine but minus the plastic top hat thing, there's no space for it.
Is this likely to cause a problem? It's a TT bike so a bearing shield is not a big deal, crankset feels solid - just wondering why the BB/ crankset is designed to have the top hat with the inner sleeve between bearing and crank spindle.
Did you measure the actual bearing that came out or just order based on the number on the seal?
A lot of bike stuff seems to be odd sizes, but marked on the seal as something else. Presumably brands can pay someone enough to make a custom sized bearing (I guess that's just machined) but just uses an off the shelf seal on it.
If the bearing fits on the axle properly, and is the right overall width then it's probably fine on a TT bike that doesn't see too many muddy rides.
Thks, I just used the code for an sram crank bearing. Think it's the right one but perhaps the bbshell is out a little- Its an aftermarket one the previous owner bonded in.
If the top bit of teh top hat has gone so its just a sleeve, could that work down the crank spindle so you end up with a rattling fit, not a snug one?
