Morning all

Final piece of the puzzle in my Vaya build (thanks Charlie) and I'm properly stuck, so am seeking help before giving up and heading to the lbs.

Am running the (treble) chainset with 34/46 rings in the middle and outer positions. Have tried an Ultegra and SRAM Rival front mech, and in each case, by the time I've dialled the inner limit screw to position the cage far enough out to cover my middle ring, there's not enough range of motion left to swing the cage out over the outer ring, regardless of what I do with the outer limit screw. I've even swapped 2 bb spacers to the non drive side to no avail.

Trying an XT front mech gives me the desired range of motion, but I can't get the mech to shift and stay in the outer position, which could be a SRAM / Shimano compatibility issue?

I don't really want to have to use Shimano stis (which would probably be much more forgiving) nor do I want to have to buy a new chainset, but at the moment, I'm thinking that a road chainset might be the easiest way, as without the bb spacers I need to space out the MTB spindle, I could certainly use the Rival mech

So... Would a SRAM MTB mech work, or will I have to spend some more. Any other tips gratefully appreciated.

PS - in every other way the build has gone great and will be lovely once complete!

You need a triple front mech, or to use the inner and middle positions on your cranks (the norm) or you can 'adapt' your front mech by cutting the tail off the spring so it'll move further out.

Edit: the XT mech should work.

Different set up on my Fargo and I run a set of 9sp 105 shifters running a tiagra front mech on a Devore chain set and XT cassette.
To get it all to wok properly my lbs ended up switching one of the bb spacers to the 'wrong' side so that the front mech would be able to get the necessary throw. Bit of a faff to begin with but has been faultless ever since.

Nick - I stripped my Planet X last night so if you want to borrow my chainsets it's just sitting in the kitchen at the moment!

Rob, I'd still need new rings to get the ratio I'm after, so am really keen to come up with another option. Nee, the XT front mech was a triple and I couldn't run a 34t ring on the inner?

Just be aware that puts the pedals off centre by 2.5mm. I did it for a while on my MTB, and can't say I noticed any real difference, but some may be more sensitive to that sort of thing, particularly on a bike you're just pedalling for hours.

You need a road triple front mech.. You'll find loads of cheap ones for sale. You can't use a MTB one as the cable pull is different. You might still find that the inner limit is hard to set though if you're using it on a middle/outer.

Thanks - I'll try a road triple front mech before I look for a road chainset. SRAM don't seem to do triples, do you reckon a Shimano one will be compatible with SRAM shifters?

My other option was to source a 68mm splined bb, and use an old MTB chainset, as without a spaced bb, I figure it might sit further inboard?

Yep, any shimano one will be fine.

Try the spacers swap first, I'm running an XT trekking triple chainset on a Fargo and it seems happiest with no driveside spacer and a road triple mech. You could also consider a Cyclocross chainset like the CX50, has close to your ratios straight from the box and plenty of rins available cheaply for 5 bolt 110bcd cranksets.

Have tried swapping spacers... still no joy. Do Shimano road triples work differently to their MTB ones then, as ive already tried and failed with an XT triple

Yes they do.. The lever which the cable is attached to is shorter, so the mechanical advantage is higher; the cage moves more for each click of the lever. I'd leave the spacers as they should be and get the proper mech.
