April fools? Madness? Genius?
Pretty clear that is not supposed to be on the web!
Nothing is going to be officially confirmed at this stage (just look at the embargo dates) but it's no secret this has been coming for a while.
Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
😕
The push for bigger wheels is begining to make sense. Soon the cassette will be bigger than the rear wheel....
Surely if you need a 50 tooth cassette you maybe should be considering a front mech instead..
Part of me wonders if there was a shimano badge and it was 11-50 would it be a line to take the cash...
12 speeds? and a 10 tooth small sprocket? It looks like it'll wear out really quickly.
Won't matter so much anyway, the sorts of people who need these big expander cassettes must rarely ride their bikes anyway.

3/10 Dave, tbh it's not up to your usual standard
I'd quite happily have a bit more range since I've enjoyed the jump from 34 to 36 to 42 big cogs then I'm sure I'd like this.
Although it'll be both too expensive and too made by Sram for me to actually buy.
Well, it's obviously an inflammatory commment, but at the same time, I must have a point. A 50t cassette? Under what circumstances would you need one of those, unless you were seriously unfit? The 10t ones can't last long at all either. Or they never used to on BMXs.
If this is correct then its a bit nuts!!!
You'd run a bigger chainring and get a higher top end, surely? Nothing to do with fitness
And I only went 1 X11 last night..
And folk used to complain that geared hubs were putting all the weight in the wrong place on the bike.

A higher top end for what?! Road riding? Or just run a normal chainring and spin a bit quicker?
And folk used to complain that geared hubs were putting all the weight in the wrong place on the bike.
😀
This is a gradual shift though. 36/38/40/42/50. No one'll notice.
I remember when I used to ride....I had a 28t cassette. The biggest available was a touring cassette at 36t I think. It weighed loads.
It's a gradual shift towards a gear box/hub though. THat'll be the next "big" thing in mtbing I think.
This makes no sense and will be really expensive. I still want it
Haha glad I missed the 11 speed boat that is OLD news
And folk used to complain that geared hubs were putting all the weight in the wrong place on the bike.
Given that sram are able to make a cassette significantly lighter than the shimano offering the I doubt your actually getting to a serious weight there.
Meh, I've just gone for a sunrace 11-42 10speed, cheaper than xt11speed , waaaay cheaper than SRAM and I still get to use shimano mechs I know won't start developing slop in all the pivots and clutch after a few weekends trips to the mountains ala SRAM
I call shenanigans.
Why would they release the XO1 version before XX1? Why the '1' and not XO2 or XX2? Odd that the resolution isn't good enough to count the sprockets on the cassette. Looks like someone's added the word eagle and swapped a couple of 1s for 2s....
I call shenanigans.
Shhh; you'll spoil a good argument 😉
I call shenanigans.
Good points. But then Sram has already crammed 4 groupsets into the space where Shimano has 2 so I'm not sure I really understand their logic at the best of times. Maybe XX1 will remain as the XC ultra-light group where X01 is more gnar/enduro.
No mention of a chain either which would be one of the more interesting parts.
And does 1 not stand for the single front ring?
30 - 50?
Still not as low as my 20 - 36! 😀
Shame it is made by SRAM. My recent experiences with their kit from a reliability and longevity point of view has been massively underwhelming. The last Sram cassette I used was fine right up until the point that I started snapping teeth off. The rear mech developed slop after a handful of rides. The press fit bottom bracket decided to fail in sympathy. The kit may be light but there is a definite trade off in reliability and longevity that I'm not willing to make.
I really am grumpy at times! 😆
A reliable 9-42 cassette is all that is needed.
I call shenanigans
Probably... But Googling a bit shows the old interwebz rumour mill is going...

Doesn't even appear to be leccy shifting either, these old fashioned Bowden cables really are Sooo 1890's...
I think the most disappointing aspect though (if true) is the ****y name... "Eagle" FFS, really?
I'm starting my own rumour now:
Campag to re-enter the MTB market with an all new 1x17 groupset. The entire group is assembled by hand from slivers of graphine by artisanal wizards and weighs just 397g (including cranks, hubs and cassette). There is no shifter, instead, customers are sent on a two week course where they learn to control the dérailleur with focused thought...
All 100% FACT!!
I thought the problem with the 9t was the chain went round a bit lumpy?
Got over 2 years from my last x9 setup. Mech went sloppy but they all do that and it never impacted shifting, in the end I let the chain go on too long and decided to run the lot of it out and go to GX.Shame it is made by SRAM. My recent experiences with their kit from a reliability and longevity point of view has been massively underwhelming.
I heard there was some tooth snapping on some 11sp cassettes but they were being happily warrantied over here which suggests batch issues rather than inherent issues.
Can't comment on BB's as I've only used hope for the last 7/8 years I reckon.
I thought the problem with the 9t was the chain went round a bit lumpy?
Nah shimano did it ages ago, just never bothered to put it on an MTB... See
Official announcement tomorrow then? 😉
Interesting that One-Up got their 50T 'shark' ring out 1 week prior 🙂
I'm a reasonably fit forty-two years old and I've recently gone 1x10 with 32T front and a 11-42 Sunrace cassette.
I took it out on my local trails for the first time on Sunday, by the time I got home I was so knackered that I fell asleep in the post-ride bath.
I'd be quite happy with an 11-46 cassette...
How are you guys finding the sunrace cassette? I'm thinking of going for the 40t with an SLX mech. Any issues with shifting of even getting on to the big ring?
I'd be quite happy with an 11-46 cassette...
How about a 10-42 with a 30 up front, almost the same. Or just go for a 30 up front with what you have if your crank will take it and put up with the loss of a gear at the other end.
How about a 10-42 with a 30 up front
this, I'm a reasonably fit 57 year old
Official announcement tomorrow then?
or maybe later today 😉
As above, I'm fitting a 30t chainring to go with the 10-42 on my 29er. The 32t just tires me out on longer steeper climbs.
It should come out later today. Sram is American and that's their biggest market. I expect it'll be around midday US time.
I heard (from someone who works with SRAM) the announcement is tomorrow at 3pm.

A mate at the LBS didn't believe me.
Eagle Crankset: XX1 – £356.00 // XO1 – £328.00
Eagle Rear Mech: XX1 – £234.00 // XO1 – £185.00
Eagle Trigger Shifter: XX1 – £131.00 // XO1 – £112.00
Eagle Cassette: XG-1299 – £353.00 // XG-1295 – £302.00
Eagle Chain: £50.00 – £71.00
X-Sync Chainring: £79.00
XX1 Complete Group: £1,173.00
XO1 Complete Group: £1,005.00
£50 chain! ouch
Yeah, those consumables are expensive.. £50 chain, £79 chainring & £302 cassette, that's £431! That said, there's always healthy discounts available.

Yea, the XT branded version with slightly less range and a £50 cassette :-p
Stollen from the Ask Chips a question thread:
"In a choice between Shimano and SRAM which groupset would you go for, XT or XTR?"
I know that to an extent the explosion in cycling and MTB's popularity over the last 15 years has lead to more 'aspirational' brands and pricing att he top end (the fact hat a Thompson elite stem/seatpost is now decidedly mid range says it all). And that the lower and mid range stuff is far better than is used to be (I happily ran X5 on my last bike, 15 yeas ago it was XT or nothing). But it's getting daft.
I'm relieved to read others have found SRAM pivots go sloppy in no time. I did fear it might be the lower end components I was using!
2 or 3x9 is where it's at.
Pah, just back from a quick spin on my 1x9 setup. I'm holding out for 1x13
XX1 Complete Group: £1,173.00
Not including a from mech...I'm out 😀
I can buy an Anthem 2 2015 for less than that!
Prices do seem a bit steep, given that in my experience with SRAM everything, with exception maybe of the cranks, is a consumable. Still, I'll probably be wanting 1x12 on one of my bikes, because I like shiny new things and I am a poser.
thats just silly money. 350 quid for a cassette????
**sigh**
This is basically the same price as XX1, which itself was cheaper than XX. How long are we gonna spend saying "how much for x?!"
>£300 XX cassettes have been here for more than 6 years now. This isn't new.

Shouldn't the real question be "how long are they gonna continue with their ridiculous overpricing?"
You think they'd have got the message by now.
Is their daft over pricing stopping people from buying it though? If the market will buy a 350 quid cassette that's what they'll sell them for!

Yeah, they never sell a group set. Never actually seen an XX1 cassette myself. 🙄
Wow insane price for what is essentially a consumable set of parts as soon as you put them on an mtb.
I certainly don't know anyone who's bought any top end Sram stuff aftermarket. Honestly, I'm not just saying that for the sake of internet point scoring.
I'm going to run 12 x 3 so I can have 36 gears.
Get an xd driver on this and get 12 x 3 x 3!

I suspect there are very many people who will be prepared to pay. They probably reside in parts of the world away from the north of England and the British Isles 😉
Njee, I think we're going to keep complaining about the cost because frankly, that much for a cassette is ludicrous.
I don't care if there are people out there who can justify the cost to themselves because 'the market will bear it'.
Cycling has finally disappeared up it's own arse.
You gotta think most people won't spend 350 on a cassette but will spend 150 for it when its on Chain Reaction etc.
Who pays full retail on these cassettes anyhow?
Max
I'm sure it's good but
“Partial freedom is partial slavery. What Eagle drivetrains do, is give the rider 100% Freedom” – Chris Hilton, Eagle Product Manager.
Really? Would 13 gears be 108.3% freedom?
I certainly don't know anyone who's bought any top end Sram stuff aftermarket. Honestly, I'm not just saying that for the sake of internet point scoring
Me.
If you don't like the prices don't pay them. It's not rocket surgery. See also Enve rims, Fox forks, Audis and houses.
Cycling has finally disappeared up it's own arse.
Well, no, it did it 6 years ago surely when SRAM released these cassettes. Prices have barely changed since. In fact, in 1999 an XTR chainset was £275, plus £50 for the BB, with an outer chainring costing £100. 17 years on prices are down 30% on drivetrain consumables in real terms.
I have XX1 on one of my bikes (came with it on).
When I need a new cassette and chain, I'll just put shimano XT on.

I've got a XX1 equipped bike. When the stuff wears it'll likely get replace with this stuff.
You got to remember the audience for this stuff. It's either XC racers on their best race bike, in which case it'll last because it's being used once a month for thirty miles. Or it's lucky sods like my who got a decent bonus and after twenty years want a really nice bike. Again, it's one of several bikes so overall usage is low.
Top end stuff has always been silly money. In 1995 XTR was double the cost of XT for a full group.
Porsches are more expensive than Mondeos and pointless comparisons are pointless comparisons.
Silly money aside, how long will the cage need to be for a 50t cassette? I suppose at least when it gets bent out it could be used as an expensive kick stand. the rear derailleur is the weak link on all mountain bikes, making them smaller or ideally removing them all together is the way forward, not the opposite.
Love the cost complaints on these - it's the top of the line Groupset!!! How many people complaining at the cost regularly fit XTR to their bikes?

and yet a 10sp cassette can be had for 19.49 or 29.99 at full RRP. Yet it's way up it's own arse there isnt it.

The GX prices are in the same ball park as the XT so I'd expect that in a 1-2 years time.

When it came out my LBS sold a lot of it, mostly upgrades, some were swap outs on floor stock bikes, people were happy to upgrade and a suitable price was arranged.
The same LBS did a front mech/shifter beer exchange a while back they just had som many hardly used take off's that they couldn't even give them away.
I can see the point of this moRe than I could 1x11 as it seems to genuinely give you the range of 2x. Saying that, the comments about the rear mech becoming more vulnerable are valid and there's bound to be a weight penalty so I still struggle to see the reason for not staying 2x.
£350 for a cassette that'll be worn out in 2 years of you do any millage.. Think I'll pass!
