i want to convert my 2x11 system to 1x11. i know i'll need a new crank, cassette & derailleur (to get the size/range i require) but will i need a new shifter?
I've got a rival 22 shifter, and i plan on using a rival 1x derailleur, so are the 2 compatible? or will i need a new shifter too? both are 11 speed, so they should be ok, shouldn't they?
also, is there anyway to remove the shifter part of the right hand shifter/brake lever? given that the shifter part will be redundant....

Your existing shifter will be fine, there is no such thing as a 2x11 rear shifter only an 11spd one (or a 10, 9, 8 etc.)
You will also not need a new crank, just remove your current rings and fit a dedicated single ring in the size of your choice (SRAM do them, as do Praxis and others).

No issues at all, fire away...

Yes, I've not done it though. There are guides online where people have done exactly this in a non destructive manner, so you can return the shifting gubbins to the lever should you require. However... If you're running mechanical brakes, its a whole lot easier to buy the dedicated SRAM left hand brake lever that's designed to match perfectly with a right hand Shift lever though. Up to you.
I've got Force 1x11 with Hydraulic discs on my winter road bike, 11-36 cassette with a 42T chainring gives me the equivalent range of a 13-29 cassette on a 34/50 chainset, a 46T ring would give the equivalent range of a 12-27 on the same 34/50 chainset, and a 50T would be roughly equivalent to an 11-25 cassette on the same 34/50 chainset again. It works well for me, there are a couple of noticeable jumps in the block compared to a closer ratio setup but it's fine on a winter bike I find. The brakes are incredible though!
Perfect, thanks for the input.
