Having an issue building up an "all road" frame (Sonder Santiago)...Finished the installing of drivetrian components yesterday using Sram Rival 1x11 hydro groupset, but driveside crank strikes chainstay under load. Looking at Alpkit's website, their Santiago 1x versions now seem to use Apex road wide cranks with a dub BB (my Rival 1 cranks are standard gxp).
Road wide Apex cranks look to be available for a reasonably low amount so tempted to plump for that given it should give more clearance, however anyone here know if Sram 12sp road wide cranks would play nicely with Sram 11sp rear mech and chain...?
Cheers
L2R
Still waiting to hear back from Sonder but in meantime have ordered a Dub BB, road wide Apex 1x chainset (12sp), and an Eagle 12sp chain.
Would still be good to hear from anyone who might have experimented with Sram 12sp 1x chainsets and 11sp RD, cassettes, etc
BTW, over lunch I quickly installed an 11sp 1x Apex chainset I had lying around after reading had slightly wider Q factor/chainline than the 1x Rival and now at least the driveside crank clears the chainstay, but still only by @ 2mm:

Is this a product of them trying to 'sneak' tyre clearance with 420mm chainstays?
That stay looks quite chonky and straight, I'd have expected a little wiggle to improve clearances...

Yes. 1x is compatible a little bit either way (trying to use a 9 speed chainring with a 12 speed chain might end messily though).
You probably didn't need the 12 speed chain.

Yes, annoyingly I'd bought the "v1.5" frame from the Alpkit Outlet store, which has Reynolds steel front triangle and chromoly stays, whereas I see the new v2 version has Reynolds 631 throughout and hourglass shaping on the chainstays to give more clearance
Alpkit/Sonder customer services simply replied today with "the frame will need a spacer to be installed behind the crankarms to help the clearance" which I don't think is technically feasible with either gxp Apex or Rival 1x cranks on a 68mm bb shell frame?! Have tried and a) doesn't give sufficient clearance and b) can't cinch upnthe cranks without them binding....as explained in my email to them
Beginning to think that they should add a disclaimer to their listing's to say the v1.5 frame isn't compatible with gxp sram 1x chainsets.

Thanks for the feedback...I'd got the chain just in case, though had also read that 12sp Sram roadwide cranks (Apex or Rival) "needed" Eagle or 12sp flat top chains. Alternative might have been an older style gxp X1 mtb crank, and changing the chainring to 40t, but not many around these days it seems
After some frustrating back and forth with Sonder customer service, I finally fixed my chainstay clearance issue (best Alpkit could suggest was fit a FSA chainset with a square taper bottom bracket). That option looked very heavy so instead I fitted Dub roadwide BB and 12sp Sram Apex roadwide cranks. Chainline is probably sub-optimal but had quiet running & clean shifting with the otherwise 11sp groupset this morning. Chain retention also seemed good using an 11sp chain. Thanks to Merlin, the cranks and BB weren't mega bucks either so am pretty happy with the result...
