I want to replace the 12 speed set up on my big bike for an 8 or 9 speed microshift set up.
To do this I would need new mech, shifter and cassette. Could I use my chain ring and chain? Or if I were to go for a 8/9 speed chain would there be problems with my current chainring? It's a standard SRAM narrow wide one which came on the bike.

I’ve used a Sram 12 speed chainring with a 9 speed Microshift drivetrain with no apparent issues. That was with a 9 speed chain though.

Why?

Sram 11 speed seems to be where the sweetspot of value and usable range is.

I just bought an NX 11 speed gear set (chain, mech, cassette and shifter) for my kids bike for about half the price of Deore.

The Microshift 9 speed gears on my boys mountain bike is very flimsy feeling and not a very precise shift.

I have both 8 speed microshift acolyte and 10 speed microshift advent x. Both have been faultless and such good value for money.

I wouldn't ever go back to sram eagle

think you'd need a new chain as the exterior of the 12 speed chain is (a lot) narrower than 8 speed, so the shifting may not be accurate with it. chainring should be fine

Have you considered changing to the Microshift Advent X (10 speed)?

I've just done so and it's great.
Changed from SRAM NX 11 speed and haven't missed the extra gear.

It was a hell of a lot easier to set up and cleaning between the rear cogs was so much easier and quicker after a very muddy ride yesterday.

I imagine the move from 3.90mm between (1.6mm thick) 11 speed cogs to 3.95mm between (1.6mm thick) 10 speed cogs makes a huge difference to cleaning.

If you're needing a new cassette you should replace the chainring too.

Won't the freehub need replacing too? Depending what standard it currently is!

Another vote for Advent X, I changed from NX 12 speed when I bent the mech and its been working fine for the last 9 months. I did swap the chain ring though, and have just picked up a spare mech, shifter, cassette and XT chain for £120 in the sales!

Thanks everyone,

I will try the 9 speed short cage with the 11-34t cassette. ITs going on my DHish bike so big ratio is not necessary.

The chainring is pretty new so should be fine!

i'm a big fan of advent x 10 speed. got 8 speed on the kids and that seems to work fine too (but they moaned about the steps in the ratio)

I do seem to kill the 18t adventx sprocket though (but thats on the eeb) and its my main pedalling-into-jumps gear so it might just be that. I've replaced teh original sprocket with a 18t shimano i had kicking about and it seems to be working so far (1 ride!).
