it's an old triple crank, 8mm allen bolt each side

these have just unscrewed and crank is jammed on

are these meant to be self extracting bolts ? if so they haven't worked and just came straight out. I tried a crank extractor but this just screwed straight into the middle of the axle - nothing to push against

Do you have the right size extractor? You can see here at 2:10 there are different ones:

Depending on the size of the hole you may be able to get away with using something like a 5p coin as an adapter to press against.

If you are replacing everything (i.e. both the crank and the bottom bracket) you can just loosen off the bolts a bit and ride it around - the cranks will come loose (but it will probably ruin the crank or spline interface).

If threading the extractor into the crank make sure the puller is done up tight, if you dont theres a likelihood thee puller will rip out taking the crank thread with it, and then you'll be in nightmare land 😉

Same goes for the old style bottom bracket. Look on you tube for tips,as these tend to have a habit of seizing themselves in. And thats a bigger nightmare than stuck cranks.

right - it needed a different extractor, one on which I happened to have. Haven't used a crank extractor for ages!
