Squirt VS Smoove

So I've gotten fed up with de-crudding my jockey wheels from using Muc-Off lube - but I have bottles of Smoove & Squirt sitting in the garage that I'd forgotten about.....

I notice that Squirt is a dual application - do once and than again 5 minutes later & ride after 4 hours, where as Smoove is once but don't ride for 24 hours.

As I understand it both are wax based so would have thought they'd be similar?

I have a fully degreased sparkly chain so no issues with old lube on there.

So out of the two which is the preferred?

Used both extensively in the past. Now use Smoove exclusively, I find it longer lasting in wet conditions

I’m a big fan of Squirt for the way it keeps my drive train clean, specifically no build up on the jockey wheels.

Thread from a couple of weeks ago - general consensus was Smoove lasts longer than Squirt.

Squirt because it's more environmentally friendly. You can assume that Smoove uses forever chemicals (microplastics) seeing as they make no mention of their absence on the bottle, or on their website.

Squirt for me...I apply at least the night before and just leave it to dry then go ride.

I think you're confusing two things.

Forever chemicals are normally Per-and polyfluorinated alkyl substances, which are generally used as lubricants or hydro-phobic coatings and appear just about everywhere eg on loo paper (from the machines which pulp the paper which use them as lubricants etc).

Micoplastics are bad, but not necessarily polyfluorinated alkyl substances.

I'd go for squirt but pay attention to the application of it. I gave my chain several applications making sure I wiped off excess after it had solidified. I didn't ride while the squirt was still wet on the chain.

Have a read of this

I use this https://zerofrictioncycling.com.au/latest-zero-friction-cycling-news-effetto-mariposa-flowerpower/ on my girlfriends bike. Much better than Smoove which she was using. It lasts well between applications in both wet and dry conditions.

Squirt's great if you ride in predominantly dry weather - BUT, and its a big but, you've really got to put the legwork in to properly clean your (preferably new) chain before the first application as wax lubes don't properly adhere to metal unless its really, really clean.

First application on a completely clean chain - manually drip onto each roller / link. Wait 5 mins, do the same again. Wipe excess from the side of the chain but leave the rollers and links saturated. Preferably let it dry overnight. It says you can ride after 4 hours but I've found you just end up getting black crud everywhere.

1 application lasts at least 100 miles of bone dry, dusty Spanish riding for me, but I did run it most of the year back home in the UK too and don't remember it lasting any less than a typical wet lube. The Zero Friction Cycling guys recommend it but in their tests the wear rate was higher than hot wax lubes because apparently it doesn't get into the rollers as easily.

Smoove

Squirt seemed to last to the end of the road
