My brakes are squeeling and it's driving me nuts.

It started for no particular reason after leaving my bike for a couple of weeks to go on holiday. They were fine before.

I think it's pad contamination as they stop squeeling when wet.

any quick fixes. I've tried disc cleaner, some hard braking to get them hot and even a bit of wet and dry.

Before I throw them in the bin is there anything else to try. I'm reluctant to bin them as they're virtually new and it's such a waste.

I know it can be irritating but really? Is it bad enough to bin them?

Chances are many other brakes will make the same noises.

In my experience there are no quick fixes and most efforts are futile and of limited effect. By all means try but I wouldn't throw them away just for a bit of squeal.

Had similar issue when I fitted an Avid disk on the rear with a set of Formula R1's. Howled continuously. Dabbing the brakes would stop it for a few seconds only to return. Riding friends were throwing stuff at me to try and make me drop back it was that bad.

Purchased a Formula disk ... and miracle cure. Calipers showed a 0.5mm difference in thickness which I figure was the issue (correct me if I'm wrong) Its that or contaminant on the Avid disk.

Is it both ends ? If not try swapping parts front to back to isolate if its the Pads or the disk. If its the disk try some brake cleaner, if its the pads you could try a light sand, or simply replace.

Bin the pads not the whole lot! But it really is more than a little bit of squeel, it's deafening. Only happens at lower speeds too, like a resonance thing.

The only idea I've got left is to put the pads in the oven or try some copper slip on the back.

It's one of those things that happens occasionally but normally sorts itself out. This time it seams persistant.

Sounds exactly like what mine were doing, like running your finger round the top of a wine glass ! Drove everyone insane.

Try cleaning / swapping the rotors to see if it resolves.

Happened to me, finally found out it was the seals that had gone, and were spraying a fine mist of brake oil onto the discs! Put in new callipers, and now fixed.

Id sand the pads and discs (lightly) and try that. A tiny chamfer on the leading edge of the disc is a solution people try in extremis. Tiny smear of coppaslip on the back of the pads might be worth a try as well
