Morning all. I'm after a new bladder for my Osprey (Talon, I think) 16, but I don't want 3 litres as it's far too much for 95% of rides. Now I know the easy answer is to just buy a smaller one but I also don't want it being thin and leaning to one side as it would feel weird. Has anyone else found a short and wide(ish) bladder for this sort of setup? 1.5 - 2 litres would be ideal I think.

You don't have to fill it all the way. If you only want 1 litre of water, just put 1 litre in.

Get one designed to fit a bumbag. Or, as thols said, don't fill it up.

There a bladders designed for hip packs which might fill your requirements. Osprey supply one with some of their packs, but not sure who makes it. Evoc and Dakine too.

@thols2 I know I don't have to fill it all the way but I find that if you go off a drop/jump the water goes to the top of the bladder then comes back down out of sync with the pack resulting in a rather off-putting sensation. Not the end of the world but as I need a new bladder free from taste improving blobs of mold I thought I'd try something different.

Will the smaller bladder not just move inside the pack also?

To be honest I know exactly what you mean, one of the reasons I prefer riding without a rucksack type pack. i have the Osprey Seral 7 hip pack and I would definitely recommend one of those.

I've seen enduro racers put sections of foam into their water bottles to prevent this.
You could put a small sheet of foam in there then just a litre.
Might work...

I don't think the lumbar bladders will work in the backpack as the shape is wrong - the lumbar has the hose in the middle and bottom but in a backpack, that will be on the side and halfway up the pack.

Just get a 3 litre bladder, don't fill it full and once one your back, just snug the straps up a bit to compress the bag down a bit more to help prevent the water sloshing around as much.

Perhaps there's a market for a giant version of those kitchen food packaging clips to clamp above the water line in a bladder. Hmmm, maybe some big elastic bands! BladderBands (patent pending).
