OK, i've never done the square taper thing before...

The Raleigh Cadent has what i reckon is a square taper BB/crankset, what i'd potentially like to do is swap it for a Shimano hollowtech or GXP style, the reason really is that my chainrings are 1 piece attached to the arms/crankset... So i can't play with the gearing etc. So what i'd like to do is run a 40T big ring along with a 28T small ring for road stuff.

The frame seems to be 68mm but i don't know 2 things..

1. What tool for a square taper BB
2. Will it leave a 'standard' threaded hole in the frame for me to chunk a HT2 bottom bracket in then ?

I expect i'll have the tool lying round, i just don't know what it is yet..

Just need the right tool to remove the BB, think they're pretty standard...don't forget a crank puller too.

The BB shell will be the correct thread for the HT2 BB

Awesome, crank puller i've got... i assume one of the 'bicycle toolkit' jobbies will have the square taper tool... if not, a local mate or two will.

Great news all round then matey, thanks lots.

You'll also need a tool to insert the new BB - either a cup that attaches to a socket or a dedicated tool.

Cup Tool

Wrench tool

The Park Tools website explains the different BBs and tools you need.

Be aware that if the bb has been in a long time, and square taper bb's can last a very long time, they can require quite a bit of effort to remove.

fitting the new BB is fine, i've done/had/got loads. Tools ain't an issue.

BB/bike is less than a year old and has only been outisde twice, it's the turbo bike.

Last one I changed had done 7 years of all year round off road commuting, I think I'd rather do yours! 🙂

Turning them the correct way helps too, or so I've heard.
