I was out a proper muddy scoot today, 3rd ride out on the 29er with a new really chunky (monkey) tyre up front, and despite using one of those wee plastic fork crown fender things the amount of spray flung up was ridiculous! Every fast bit ended up being a gritty eye blink fest, made it a bit crazy at times.
So, are 29ers just too big for these guards to work? Is the arc of spray just that bit too wide for them? And are there other front fenders that do a better job? I've not had anything like this on 26 or 650.
Thanks
I've not noticed any difference on my 29er, I use a little fender bender, but I'm always impressed at the amount my little 26" commuter sprays into my eyes! I've seen those longer endooro style mudguards but they seem to clog with thick mud.
tick
Not tried on a 29er dan but the mudhugger offers great coverage.
The guard you're probably using comes in a version that extends in front of the crown as well as behind. Noticeably better than the purely behind version
I use a shorty on the front of the 29er Dan, which sheds mud earlier in the rotation, I use a wee fender and also a crud catcher on the down tube, seems to work okay.
How was the CM? I use them on the front of the yeti in summer, great for big rocky days as its size inspires confidence, but it's guff in mud (26er obsolete size btw)
Run Rock Guards on every wheel size... Love 'em.
Stick a crud catcher on the downtube as well. They work perfect for me on all wheel sizes.
I've recently got the mudhugger FR (for my 29er) but had to get the extension as well so I could remove the crud catcher. Without the extension it's just a bigger expensive plastic fender thing. Felt a bit ripped off but ho hum.
Another vote for the RockGuards.
I've got a medium length one for when it's propper shitty and a short one for summer* use.
* 😆
Little crowny guards are never that useful when it's properly wet, I put mine on for summer but for winter it's shockboards for all. OK so the shockboard mounting hardware is dire but that's why god gave us cable ties. They cost peanuts and they work superbly.
(really don't understand this trend for big arch mounted guards like the dfender- "This product is heavier, about 5 times as expensive, can choke solid with mud, and doesn't work as well" Little arch guards are good but big ones are weird)
Mudhugger FR with extender works well
I have experienced the same issue on my 29er, using an Enduro guard which seemed to work on my old C456.
Almost seems like there isn't a guard at all when flying down the screaming mile in the Peak District
I've fitted the mudhugger fr to my 29er makes a lot of difference , cuts the mud flying up loads .. Well worth it.
29+ on my bike = a lot of spray!
Muckynutz style arch guard and down tube crud catcher is so effective that i've stopped wearing glasses in the winter. Of course YMMV.
29er here and muckynutz crown style guard, the slightly longer one, and one of their gut guards in the downtube. Also mudhugger on the rear. Works a treat even when I had slicks on it and was commuting through veritable rivers on the roads.
When it's really filthy there's no substitute for a Shockboard or something like it:
Though on Thursday the mud was so sticky (the last time I encountered mud with this particularly tiresome consistency was Big Dog 2010) that the entire space between tyre and mudguard filled with wattle and daub (and around the whole drivetrain and rear triangle). Had to carry the bike to less sticky ground because the wheels wouldn't turn at all!
So with the Mudhugger you need to buy the mudguard and then spend another £7.50 on an extender if you ride a 29er?
🙄
. Neoprene forks guards cut a lot out
I went bikepacking with one of those on the WHW, section through Glencoe it was absolutely pissing. short of it, a set of 8 months old revs, stanchions absolutely trashed as all the wet crushed granite got flung into the wiper seals.
So I'm out!
Mucky nuts fender bender on one of my 29ers. Works pretty well I thought
Shockblade on my rigid 29er, which is what I ride in the local slop. Have been much cleaner with this
More noticeable on my body than my face though

Depends. On my 100mm forks i dont, probably do on the 150mm though. Its about the angle the mud flicks off and through the gap above the crown, more travel = longer guard needed.
Summer:
http://www.rapidracerproducts.com/EnduroGuard.htm in "Large" Keeps 90% off the muck off your face.
Winter:
Add a Mucky Nuts Gut Fender and Butt Fender. The Gut fender get the last 10% and keep your body drier/cleaner.

I see thanks, I have a 120mm Pike. Might be OK then.
MuckyNutz not really cutting it at the mo.
