You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Hi, I'm trying to find out which of the spot gps trackers I should get. At some point next year I'll be doing some bikepacking and long distance multi day races.
There's the Spot Gen3, the Spot Satellite messenger and the Spot Personal tracker. On top of that you have to subscribe and pay more for extra services? It's all a bit confusing.
I'm sure there are other brands to choose from. It needs to be reliable, strong and able to work in remote areas with no mobile coverage.
The three above all work in the same way - I have the first gen Spot Tracker. It's pretty good, sending updates every five minutes or so and has buttons for calling for help from friends or a '911' button for getting emergency help.
It works anywhere in Europe and US, plus a reasonable number of other countries. It doesn't have complete global coverage.
I also have a Spot Trace hidden in the motorbike. It sends me a text message if the bike moves and then tracks it wherever it goes, either with or without me. Makes me feel a little more relaxed about leaving it places!
That seems to be much more reliable than my gen 1 device, which did seem to be a bit hit and miss on occasion.

DeLorme InReach is another one to look at
I've not looked at costs though
Spot annual plans seem very expensive. Never heard of DeLorme but it looks very good with better tailored annual or monthly plans.
DeLorme uses Iridium, which is much better than the often flaky Globaltelesat used by Spot
