Hello all
The rear brake lever on my MTB has become quite spongy with a lot of travel. The first couple of pulls on it don't do a lot then the subsequent pulls engage the brake and it becomes firm. I'm sure it's a common issue but any ideas? And any ideas how to fix it?
Cheers
Bleed the brakes. Spongy feeling is due to air,and sometimes moisture, the latter being if the fluid hasn't been changed in a couple of years.
Go through he bleeding process and push enough new fluid through so it replaces the old fluid and make sure A.no air is present(little bubbles coming out the 'out' tube) and B, that everything's done up tight.
When you come to replacing the master cylinder top cap(if its that type) overfill it and make sure you don't capture any air as you replace the rubber diaphragm
Air. Bleed. This is the only problem I've had with a (now) 3-4 year old SLX rear brake, following a new hose when I swapped it to a different frame. I'm a big fan of the Syndicate (Marshy's Method) top down bleed for a general fluid refresh, and lubing the pistons, but it didn't dislodge whatever air bubble was trapped. I bought the Epic Bleed kit, performed it as per instructions, and 2100km later the rear brake is still rock solid.
Any suggestion on a bleeding kit and link to a process?
Check out Total Bleed Solutions they do kits for most brakes and have some useful guides.
Bleed! Probably much of a muchness but I’ve always used Epic. Alex is a top bloke
Edit to add Link to bleed kit
I bled a set of Clark’s I put on my sons bike by the Shimano method
Bought the bleed cup and it was all good
Cheers guy. Gone with the Epic kit and will follow instructions. Thanks
Try a lazy bleed first. Pull brake lever back to the bar, secure in place (I use velcro strap) then wait overnight or a bit longer. Often fixes the problem
Thanks guys. The kit arrived, I followed instructions yesterday and it's rock solid now.
Thanks for the lazy bleed option too, useful to know.
