Going to build up some xm 481's in 27.5 on some hope pro 2 will be needing 32x272 and 32x273 plus a few spares do I really need the washers and squorx ? Would be after a double butted spoke 2-1.8-2 with a leaning towards economy any one found any good deals ?
SJS Cycles is where I tend to end up getting them.
Also, I think the rims come with the washers and nipples. Mine did, and I build up a set of 29ers with those recently.
Thanks ,these rims are not new though they do come with the washers been a while since building a wheel wondering how different the shoulder on the squorx are
ACI Alpina from Cycle Basket. Used them after a recommendation on here, and would do so again.
Ah right.
I don't remember the shoulder looking much different from a standard nipple, although TBF I didn't really compare the two side by side. I'd definitely use the washers though, I'm sure they'd not supply them without good reason.
Thanks Mr northwind aci and cycle basket looking good
Another one using ACI Alpina's from Cyclebasket, though I think they only come in even sizes so the 273's mentioned in the OP might be a problem. Either 272's or 274's should work in most cases depending which side of 273 you calculated.
I just get my stuff from www.spokesfromryan.com, you can get the spokes, squorx and washers from them and speak to them to double check it's all good for the hub/rim.
Drop them a call and they'll probably sort you out the best spokes/washers/nipples for your build and have them in the post the same day.
Another one using ACI Alpina’s from Cyclebasket,
I might buy from them again, as they are cheap, but buyer beware and get some spares up front if you do. I got some recently, and when one broke right in the middle whilst building the wheel(*) my request for a replacement was met with a two paragraph lecture along the lines of 'never seen that before', culminating in "Nevertheless I am prepared to reimburse you with the cost of the broken spoke." and a 25p refund.
Back to Spokesfromryan for me.
(*) no, not overtensioned, I have a tensiometer (which obv. might not be exact), and ultimately when does a spoke *ever* break in the middle rather than the nipple or either end.
Cycle basket is the cheapest by some ways, even with extra .Spokefromryan was helpful but sujested that I would either have to use squorx or Sapim double square nipples with the DT Swiss washers both of these are alloy which I don't like so thank you everyone for your advice
@Dale thats not the case - you can get pro head (PHR) nipples in alu or brass, squorx, double head or regular. Sapim I think do their polyax (which is the equivalent) in many flavours too.
I’d use the phr washers otherwise you could crack the rim. The squorx nipples have a rounded shoulder to play nicely with the curved PHR washers - or I think the pro head DT nipples have the same - you can get those in brass.
I recently re-rimmed a wheel from 27.5 to 29” rims. They were XM481’s with alloy squorx and after 4 years they still unscrewed beautifully - so I think as alloy nipples go they are decent. They have a the pro lock compound in them which apparently helps stop them unwind when you don’t want them too but also stops them seizing.
I’ve historically bought DT competitions from Rose bikes but Brexit nailed that so I mostly buy ACI double butted spokes from cycle basket these days.
I have bought some cheapie Sapim leaders from Ryan in Bristol but they were still quite pricey. When I’ve compared their DT competition equivalent spokes from Sapim they’ve been a lot more expensive than aci from cycle basket. Good service from Ryan though - I think I had the spokes I ordered from him the next day.

yep, proper legit spoke manufacturer people seem to ignore at a great price. and its even better now the website isn't like something from the 80s

Slightly odd advice, what was the question?
I will say that I do like Squorx or double square nips as the long thread in them makes me feel better about going slightly longer with my spoke calculations, thus ensuring that I don't get the dreaded "No go":
Think the advice was against what they sell, they don't do the brass squorx, you can get them elsewhere though.
I've used alloy squorx for years without issue, but can see the appeal of brass, i just got cheap and had a good deal on buying about 200 squorx aluminium for a few quid ;o)
I used https://www.justridingalong.com when I built my last wheel set a few months ago. I have previously used SpokesfromRyan but JRA were cheaper and much more helpful when I asked some questions about correct spoke length. I'd use JRA again next time.
Ryan builds wheels on ebay has free postage, I've used jejames in the past but postage is now £4 unless you're buying something else to knock your order up to £50 for free p&p. For some reason I get bad vibes from cyclebasket website, it's just not appealing in any way and you have to buy 40 spokes and then you still get stung with a £6.50 delivery.
I picture the owner as a right cantankerous old git.
Do aci spokes still shed the finish onto your fingers as you build, so by the time you finish your build your spokes have finger prints on them and you look like you've been thumbing through old news print for days?
@mr greeny made me smile got the feeling he has a lot of experience with Roady wheels and some strong views on proprietary parts which I mostly agree with .
Trying to keep the wheel build price down as really trying to keep an old bike going untill the second hand bike market settles into something I can afford . Struggling to understand the pricing of squorx nips best I can find is £30 on 100 for brass .Don't think they have extra thread they look like they have the same amount as 12mm nips but with extra unicorn magic . Now I am beginning to sounding contancerous !
An aside but what are the hub and nipple washers on the Spokes from Ryan website? Are these only used with certain rims/hubs or something you can use on any build.
I built quite a lot of wheels ten years ago but there seem to be a lot more options one spoke and nipples than when I last bought them!

They're stainless spokes, what finish?

Should have seen the old website it was like they had taken the old CRC UKMB double page catalogue pages and digitised it.

Maybe, but the thread definitely extends further up the nipple. It mostly just makes me feel better, as if engineers are to be believed it's only the first few threads that support the load anyway. Also find Squorks more relaxing to lace up initially (and true up actually) - much easier to tighten up than a flat head nipple, the engagement is far more positive than a nipple wrench, plus you can hold bladed spokes much closer to the nipple when there isn't a spoke wrench in the way.
All that said, for budget and longevity brass is the way to go. Alu nips are all about the weight really.

I cut a squorks and normal 12mm nipple in half out of interest.
Can confirm they are the same except for the extra bit on top for the squorks.
Dam ,survivor you're reinforcing my grump ! Still heading towards aci as they come with 12mm brass nipples will see if the soulder and washer look ok or If l may be in for a lot of retentioning as they settle together

For a budget build Sapim polyax nipples would probably be close enough to DT squorx (both have a radius or ball type seat) to work with the DT washers. And should be considerably cheaper.
Thanks everyone for chipping in, my faith in people has been restored. Realise now that benpinnick had offered the Sapim polyax info but I was still too grumpy to realise..so eBay has ryanforspokes selling polyax nips £5 for 100 and with the money saved I shall probably plant some trees !

DT Swiss pictures including an indication of the threads in link above FWIW.
Have you got the rims yet btw? I got some XR391s recently that came with the Squorx nips+washers.
