Just had 2 new spokes built into my wheel and first ride out" ping " another gone .the wheelbuilder told me it might happen, said there was lots of strange tension in other spokes and probably cheaper to get a new wheel? I'm not a master of the wheel and i could never true a wheel, so i dont understand the last bit , when younger i just made them worse when i got the spoke key out. So now i have to tell the wife i need £300 pounds for new wheels blimey she is gonna be happy .

Not how I read it? Another gone, not one of the new ones.

Did the wheelbuilder just fit the spokes and retrue? Sometimes worth a full rebuild when a wheel's had a bit of use, tension can end up all over the shop. But sometimes you just find everything's a bit tired. Pers'nally i'd probably untension it and see what the rim does, if it's still round and in good shape then either full retension, or new spokes. If it's mullered then things are a bit more complicated.

If 2 spokes have snapped ,due to exceeding their fatigue life or elastic limit, the chances are that some others have aswell. Not to mention the shock loading that occurred when the spokes snapped. If the wheel has had a significant impact and the rim has bent you are now using spoke tension to bend the rim straight AND support your fat ass.
Black spokes 😆

Rorschach- spot on ? Black spokes????WTF and the first 2 snapped at Whinlatter so i reckon bite the bullit and new wheels - they are OEM on a £600 hardtail and im 115 kilo , they have had a beating from a off road triathalon to a couple of epics as well as the training for such events . The bike is almost rebuilt from the knackered parts i replace , im going to re name it "cannonTrev" as i designed most of it (£600 pounds now invested £1000)and now new wheeels ????

Stop whining, you don't need new wheels.

I tell people the same thing - one snapped spoke, replace and retrieve and it's fine. Two or three, it's likely they're all fatigued and will just snap in sequence - better to replace the lot.

Al -Cynical- really ??? 3 spokes, 2 rides and the mechanic says it could happen ?? i think i do? the first drop off of 2 feet and ping i can feel the wheels are on the edge of failure ,i can replace all spokes a week at at time @£20 a pop or spend the wifes Grandma funeral money on some tasty wheels. Question is which ones? crank porn or Cross Max Porn or ???

I had one spoke go so took it in to be fixed. The fella phoned to say another went when it was just sat on the stand. He measured tensions and thought one was pretty high. Got him to replace all 3 and the wheel has been fine since.

I think what Al is getting at is that you only need new spokes - the rims and hubs will be fine.

Edit: composite, that's rubbish - if one went on the stand then it was fatigued, more likely that it as loose and the rest were at a good tension.

It's not possible to over-tension spokes.

The one that went on the stand was not the one he measured. He started measuring them after that happened and (as I remember it) said one was much higher than the rest. Maybe I'm remembering wrong and he said the tension was out and I just thought he meant higher. Not sure now 😳

My point is though that 3 were replaced and the rest of the wheel has been fine since. 🙂

Having said that though I had a mate who had been using the same wheels for about 8 years. He started snapping spokes and getting them repaired until he was snapping one like every other ride. At that point he bought some new wheels.

Spokes that snap are almost always the ones at low tension - the low tension makes them fatigue, and so they snap 😉

See that's your mistake- stop using solid gold spokes.

So anyway- what wheels do you have? If they've cheapo ones it'll make less sense to revive them than if they're good.

£600 bike wheels, so worth around £300.
