I want to build up an Alfine 8sp hub on a 36 hole 700c cyclo cross rim (Alex ACE19, ERD 598.6mm) and I seem to remember someone saying once that the extra flange length made running a 3-cross set up really hard to put together. Is this true?

Anyone out there with any ideas?

I didn't notice any problem.

I generally relieve the spoke hole in the direction of the spoke which helps (spoke holes seem to be drilled vertically these days.

Get a cordless drill with an appropriate size drill bit and zap the spoke hole at the desired angle for a few secs.

Angle doesn't have to be exact - after all most wheels are built with vertical holes.

This may be a really stupid question. But how do you work out what length of spoke you need? is it the entire length? from the curve to thread? curve to top of thread?

Not sure how you measure a spoke length, but to work out the length you need there are loads of spoke calculators on the web- Just google 'spoke calculator!' 🙂

entire length iirc - remember you get different length nipples so take that into account 12mm is standard

Length is from inside of bend to end of thread.

Hi cynic-al, why did you choose to use 2x?
