Spoke length - close enough?

I'm rebuilding a wheel that came on a bike I bought second hand.

I found some 294mm spokes in a drawer and hoped they'd be close enough, but was delighted to find them pretty much bob-on when I calculated - 295mm recommended.

Should be an improvement on the previous build!

Given that many spokes only come in 2mm increments, rounding up or down is the norm - ideally, spokes should come to the top of the slot when fully tightened, but provided they reach beyond the flare of the head you should be grand.

Can you see the pic I posted of the spokes and nipples I cut out of the previous build?  Took me a couple of goes, not always there when I reload.

that is pretty extreme but if the nipples hadn’t bottomed on the thread and the spokes hadn’t poked through the rim rape I suppose there was no harm

Some would have bottomed out (interestingly, I was able to wind the nipples all the way past the threads and onto the rest of the spoke where they slid smoothly) and they were poking lumps into, but not through, the rim tape.

Still, they went round stayed round for a good long time.  Puts some perspective on all the internet handwringing about rounding up or down 1mm from the calcs!

I wonder if there are any 10-year-old posts out there asking: "I have a range of spare spokes between 4 and 8mm too long, can I use them anyway?"
