We're moving to Speyside - by virtue of selling our house in Hampshire and a dearth of rental properties near the west coast, we've ended up renting a house near Dufftown for the foreseeable. As it's quite a small property, most stuff is going into storage and I'm limited to one bike - but which one? Road, gravel, MTB...and hopefully the fatbike will see duties in the winter.

Gravel bike will give you loads of good options in that area.

Just placed an order for a new carbon Specialized Diverge on the basis of this recommendation - it better be good!

I'm just over the hill in Aberlour, I'd be taking the gravel bike for sure, lot's of exploring can be done on that. They've just upgraded the Speyside Way between Craigellachie and Carron, it's very fine compacted gravel and brilliantly fast, this is a good way to link up different areas and trails.

There are some techy trails about but a gravel bike will let you explore the tamer stuff, lot's of windfarms around and it'll be perfect for that too.

I used to rent out the (cheaper) Diverges. Nice bikes. I wouldn't regret owning one.

Some ideas around the Tomintoul area... https://www.glenlivetestate.co.uk/outdoor-activities/walking

You have the Speyside Way spur to Tomintoul and down to Craigellachie to then pick up the rest of the SSW.

Lots of tracks over the hills on the N side of the Spey, many upgraded due to windfarms.

I do hope you like whisky

There’s the Moray Monster Trails within a half hours drive (Fochabers way).

I can thoroughly recommend the section from Delnapot to Cromdale... 🤭🤣*

Only a complete idiot would ignore the instructions on the SSW website to avoid that bit if you have a bike.

Thanks a lot - I'll be giving this a try in a month's time!

I do like a dram occasionally, but hampered by a long-standing memory of going to the Braemar Highland Games about 1982, getting into the Grants hospitality tent where a "wee dram" was a tumbler-full.

Try having the Grant family as donors at work. Christmas is 'generous'... *hic*

Obviously. No one is expecting you to drink a whole bottle.

Hey - you could be me!

Moving from near Petersfield to near Ferness in the beginning of July. I have the advantage of having been a frequent flyer to the area since my parents moved back to the area in 2005. Safe to say I think of it as a cycling nivana. I genuinely think you won't be short of riding regardless of the bike you take. Gravel bike would make sense as an only bike however. I think my one bike solution there would be a gravel capable of taking some 650b big ass tyres and second wheelset of 700c with 28mm road tyres and cassette. And that bike having the capability to have full guards (though I find the road riding there so much less dirty in the winter than down here). I don't quite own this yet but it'll be on my shopping list for a B2W purchase.

If you are interested in having a ride/coffee in the summer PM me. I'm planning on joining a club when I get there to make the first steps to making local friends but where I arrive I'll be on my ownsome.

waves @convert - on the other side of some hills but good to explore. Saw someone's track yesterday, loop (a big loop) on gravel bike from Lossiemouth, out past Dallas, the Dava, in by Drynachan and home through lesser roads by Nairn and Forres.

All covered above. Great butchers in Dufftown, cheapest venison I've found in the area and very good black pudding too.

So much can be done by bikes as above, or a comfy rigid bike with either XC tyres for distance or plus tyres for more bounce.

Hey! Are you all following me?! Moved from Haslemere to Fochabers in February - just before lockdown. Timing or what. 10 week old baby preventing much of the exploring but I'm minutes from the Speyside Way so using lockdown to househunt and look at OS maps and plot routes. Got a pal in Kingussie so that will be my first stop.
Oh and Dovebiker - legendary volumes of snow are spoken of - I think the fatbike will be very useful..
I'll see you on a hilltop windfarm soon
