Looking around for new tyres, cant afford the Schwalbes which i've been running for a while so looking for something cheaper. Was going to get Maxxis ADvantage until a friend for a big pinch flat when running them tubeless so ditched that idea, as has he. Have been looking at the Captains for my hardtail so thought the Purgatorys might be a good call for the Full Sus as they are slightly larger in volume.

What are people experiences of these tyres? I will be using them for general trail riding and trail centres, nothing too exptreme. What is their rolling resistance like? I've heard the Captains roll fairly quickly, but how much slower are the Purgatorys and if they are much slower, should I consider the Captains for general trail riding or are they too narrow for that?

Any opinions will be gratefully received.

I have been riding Purgatory on my hardtail in the Lakes for the past 8 months.....don't seem slow to me and stick well to general trails but not brilliant on wet grass/mud going uphill sometimes but I don't ride that sort of thing much.

They are cheaper than some other tyres but not at the expense of their quality imo.

Partner has one on the back of her hardtail - I bought it for myself but wouldn't fit on the back of mine as quite a wide tyre.

Very comfy as very high volume/profile and no issues with grip so far. Seems to be wearing very well too.

It certainly rolls faster than the Panaracer Cinder it replaced, and they are very good value. Will try one on the front of mine when the current Ignitors wear out.

just put a purg on the rear the the cotic last week for nearly half the price of a new NN UST (not that i'd spend £40 on a tyre anyway)!

comes up 2.2 spot on, sideways are not as thick as a NN UST, i think it rolls faster than a NN (not tried the captains) and just as grippy if not more so than a NN as well - only disadvantage is the thinner sideways so it went on the HT and not the FS

Purgatorys are my favourite all rounder at the mo, slightly slower and heavier than Captains but offer much more grip and confidence.

I bought these as an intermediate trail tyre something between an all mountain peaks/lakes tyre and a woodland singletrack xc tyre, but I have ended up using them all over, only chink in the armour is mud performance, but you cant have everything. @ only £40 a pair its a no brainer IMO

I've got a 2.2 Purgatory on the front & 2.0 Captain on the back of my bike (it's what the bike came with) and it seems like a good combination so far.

Good grip in most conditions I have so far encountered (erm....wet).

Far too much consideration for tyres going on here but my 2 pence worth.
HR or Ignitor Front
Cross mark rear.
or even faster:
Crossmark front
Larssen Rear.
