Hi guys
I've been running the hillbilly grid 27.5x2.6 front for a couple of months now on my winter hack hardtail, and to be honest I bl**dy love it. Mud, roots, rocks and loam it does everything for me.
So today i popped into my local shop,to get the same again for my 29" YT capra. They only had the black diamond compound, but said it's just as good just a bit heavier.
So I've come to fit it to the rim, and it feels really stiff and heavy. It doesn't seem like it will mould well across roots and rocks. Also running it up front, do I need the extra carcass stiffness and strength? I'm not the best of riders, and never push a tyre so that it burps regardless of the pressure.
I ride steep ups and down, very enduro based. But feel this tyre is too downhill orientated for me.
Can anyone shed any light on this for me? Thankyou
It'll be fine, I'm running a soft compound 2.6 magic mary, and the it feels like a bike stiff lump when new, but is bloody great up front.
The Blck Dmnd was developed to make the side walls more robust after the Gripton Grid compound was more prone to side wall damage compared to the old Grids. Our daughter has competed on them for most of the Enduro season, Butcher, Hillbilly and Eliminator, and rates them better than the Grids, especially for side wall reliability.
Yup, I like a less solid tyre so I prefer the old gripton but it's a preference thing.
Remember you can run lower pressures in a stiffer tyre- this can get unexpected results, like, a really stiff sidewall and low pressures can give a really flexible tread face. Which you might like, or might hate
Thanks very much guys. Some very useful opinions/comments there.
I'm going to try it, see how I get on. The weight thing bothers me though, I want to go lighter where possible not heavier hahaa
