Been looking at my options to spend my voucher on.

I'm after a trail friendly all day bike, i'm no down hill /bike park dirt jumper

I'd more or less settled on an Orbea Occam H30, after reading up and watching online reviews it seems to tick the boxes.

Popped into local shop to throw my leg over for sizing, whilst there, the shop assistant suggested a Specialized Status 140. the Fox suspension at this price is a tempt, but the reviews i've watched all portray the bike as more of a play /downhill bike more than trail.

Anybody with real world experience of either bike?

also looked at Canyon Nueron 6 but wary of not being able to try it for sizing

cheers in advance for any feedback

How much do you have to spend? Lots of trail bargains around at the moment.

The Status is very much a winch and plummet bike rather than a trail bike IMO.

The voucher applied for is £2100 still in application so could up it to £2500 for  the right bike.

My previous full suspension was a Cannondale Prophet, might give an idea of what I'm after

Kramer, yes that's the impression I'm getting, no  matter how good a deal it is, doesn't seem right for me

I'd be tempted to go for the neuron 7. Great spec for the money and nice trail geometry. If you're worried about sizing, have a look on geometrygeeks and do some comparisons and you should be able to find your best size.

You must be impressively fit if you can manage an all day trail ride as a commute!

The status isn't a great pedaller IMO, its also very slack and quite a heffer. Not a trail bike, more a bike for bike parks and groms.

I’m after a trail friendly all day bike.....

I’d more or less settled on an Orbea Occam

You called....
https://strava.app.link/gIMeq7mOEDb

To be fair most of my long rides were on my Anthem but this one was different because stuff like Cavedale was actually fun. Great to be able to enjoy the ups and the downs rather than just survive them. Fair enough the road and fire road still sucked but the bike is brilliant at most stuff.

Did a few 6km days on the Alps too. Quite a good bike

Do it ( buying am Occam. not necessarily riding the peak.)

Just be sure to get rid of the ****ing stupid 175mm crankset.

UPDATE

went down to local shop to sit on the occam for sizing, website had me on a large, reach was definitely too short. Xl is the way forward.

Canyon still looks a good buy but again they suggest a large. Based on the occam and similar geo for the xl's, it's wrong for me. wish i could sit on one but don't fancy traveling 3 hours plus to surrey for 5 mins on a bike.

thanks by the way for the feedback

How tall are you? I'm 185cm and have a large 2020 occam. I considered the XL but decided 500mm reach was too much and the seat tube was too tall so I'd have to downsize the dropper. I prefer the marginally longer reach on my cotic but I wouldn't say the occam is too short.

Enjoy the new bike!

Davros - im 6-2 sooo... 187-188cm (thank you google), the large occam definitely felt short/cramped.

need to look at returns policy for canyon, i mean can you build up a bike then say no?

The steep seat angle on the occam makes it feel much shorter than it is (if you're coming from an older bike at least). But it sounds like you're firmly in the XL camp.

Well I’ve made my choice, going with the Orbea Occam

Got bits and pieces, turbine cranks, slx brakes etc that I’m gonna swap over.

But I have question regarding shifter ratios, can I use a 2017 xt shifter with a 2023 Deore mech.

cheers

Pretty sure the m6100 12 speed mech has a different cable pull to 11 speed

But you can get a xt 12 speed shifter that will work for about £30

Merlin have slx 12 speed shifters very cheap. If you want one even cheaper I've got one in the spares box.

Weeksy - the die is cast. its ordered and on its way from Reino de Eespana.

Davros - thanks for the offer, Need the shifter to be I spec mount, that was the only reason id be swapping the parts over. Just for the cleaner looks and single finger levers/reach adjustment on the slx brakes.

Just brainstorming whilst i wait impatiently for my new bike

Again cheers for everybody's input

PS. was going to post colour way pic, but can't for the life of me get it to work. Metallic Dark Green & Lime, its spot on

I bought my nephew a 2021 occam and it's an excellent bike. I ride a commencal meta and riding the occam made me want a less aggressive bike.

Good choice

Sonder Evol? They’ll build the bike to meet your spec and budget.

I’ve bought two bikes from them on cycle to work scheme and it was a breeze.

Interesting thread this. I'm also looking at spending a voucher and my requirements are similar to you. More trail than enduro, up to £3.5k but would prefer less. I'm slightly more limited by voucher being Halfords so not quite the same range of retailers but still some choice.

Current and previous bikes have been Stumpys but I fancy a change. Occam H30 at £2,499 seems a great option but is there anything else that I am missing that I should be looking at?

Even better, I can get it from JE James for £1,999 but might need to add on some admin. Seems daft not to no..?

Worth looking at the trance, which has a better spec for not much more:

BLEEURGHHHH NO!

My son has that Trance and it's not fit to carry the Occam's sandals. No way.

Occam every day between those two.

< edit to concede that I am comparing the Trance to a Carbon, XT, DTSwiss, Fox very good spec Occam. Maybe the £2k version is as shit as the Trance...>

But I really doubt it.

What about the Trek Fuel EX 8 Gen. Bargaintastic price at £1,999...

My mate has that version of the trance and it's excellent for the money. Slightly longer and a touch slacker than the occam. Flip chip. Nice light frame. Very capable. Only weak points are the heavy wheels and possibly the brakes if you prefer shorter levers. Only 130/120 though so depends if you want extra squish.

Not ridden the alloy occam but I have the carbon version. I like the geo. Nice and balanced.

Trek fuel another great option. Spoilt for choice!

Looks like a coin toss between Orbea and Trek

i prefer the look of the Orbea but I prefer the bottle mount position on the Trek. It’s a tough call.

Yep, that is the Trek. I think decision is made for Trek, unless if I stumble on a heavily discounted e bike within budget!
