Proper scary moment today.
Going down Coldharbour in Surrey at 60km/h+ - came out of wooded section at bottom and big gust of wind hit my front wheel sending bike into big speed wobble. Clamping top tube with knees sorted it out but only after a seriously terrifying experience. Happens very rarely - probably 5 times in 30+ years of cycling. But 5x too many!
Yup, I was plagued by it earlier in the year on my Giant TCR - the first bike I've had with deep rims. I even had it on windless days.
Would kick in around 55km/h on certain roads.
Proper scary but I found pressing my left leg into the top tube would calm things down.
Had this a couple of times, really frightening and it affected my descending for several years. I have got over the fear now thank god because that in itself can cause the dreaded wobble if you tense up.
It is terrifying because you have no control over the bike.
