Quotes this statistic -
In Southampton, just three per cent of journeys are made by bicycle, yet a staggering 26.1 per cent of collisions where someone was killed or seriously injured involved a cyclist.

I knew it was a poor record, but blimey I'm speechless 😯
I can believe it, I went for a 65 mile pootle, no issues at all until I rode the short distance from Eastleigh to shirley. No less than 5 cars pulling out / me needing to slam brakes on or swerve and 1 pair of pedestrians walking out between parked cars. I even had to bunny hop a f'king great pothole as the driver next to me was pushing me into the curb. I'm not riding that route again if I can help it....I just don't get why drivers can't treat cyclists as vulnerable road users.
Standard of general driving in and around coastal Hampshire is at best variable. The roads are horribly congested and the area is densely populated. A recipe for stats like that.
I have been catching up on what's been done at the itchen bridge. I will reserve judgement until I have used it on a bike but it seems from the press that drivers and cyclists are United for once.
Back in uni around 2000 at Southampton I used to ride my bike around a fair bit. I swear the bus drivers were actively trying to kill cyclists; I was forced off the road frighteningly often.
I'll bet 100% involved a car, even though cars probably account for less than 90% of journeys. So, what's their point?
Most collisions where somebody is killed or seriously injured in a city (as opposed to outside a city, where vehicle speeds are high enough to injure or kill the occupants) will involve a vehicle and a more vulnerable road user (cyclist, pedestrian, motorcyclist etc). So, if cycling accounts for 25% of the miles travelled by such vulnerable users in the city it will probably account for 25% of the serious injuries too.
Sounds like an attempt to use statistics to push an agenda. Are they trying to claim that cyclists are responsible for these injuries/deaths and should modify their behaviour in some way.
