Hi there
I have a lovely 2006 Stumpy FSR Comp with a bit of play in the front hub ( Spesh Stout). The play only happens when the wheel is in the forks and the QR is tightened and you can wiggle the wheel a bit when holding the tyre. The cone shaped nuts are tight and don't have play when held in fingers and wiggled when the wheel is removed. What could it be? and how much roughly would it cost to repair if need be? I can feel the play when riding over roots etc.
Its standard 9mm QR
Any help is most appreciated
Mark

I had one of those in my spesh fsr xc which needed tightening up regularly, unfortunately I only fixed it by renewing the wheel although with regular tightening it was kept in check.Try tightening the cones up (but make sure wheel still spins freely)

The stout has sealed cartridge bearings and the only way sort the play is to change the bearings.

There are at least three 'stout' front hubs in existence that I have encountered, 20mm, 9mm thru axle, and 9mm cup and cone. Mrs j's 2009 myka had a specialized branded hub with 'stout' etched on it which was indeed cup cone and loose bearings. I know because I serviced the bearings before I sold it on the classifieds. I have a 20mm one in the shed for a rainy day wheel build, and a mate has the rather nicer 9mm thru-axle one with cartridge bearings, and there is no preload adjustment on this one.(recently replaced the cartridge bearings on that too)

Mark, have a look at the park tools page here and you should be able to work out which one yours is and what you can do about it.

somtimes the sealed bearing stout hub wears and new bearings still leave it with play as the axle woddles round inside the bearing.
