looking for some new spd shoes. always got on with specialized, and the recon model look like they will fit the bill.
anyone using em ?
Not tried the Recon but I do have some Torch which is the road version. They’re OK, my MTB shoes need replacing soon so I was thinking Recon based on the Torch being nice.
Loved my ancient Spesh Trail 110/120's but that was rather a long time ago. Recons were on my radar but I settled for Shimano XC7 instead, Michelin outer sole, stiff but comfy.
Generally get on well with Specialized shoes - got 5 pairs on the go.
Thought the recon would replace three of them (including some rather old MTB comps) a bit found the ‘tongue’ area really hard. Gave up as I didn’t think they’d break in.
So - TL:DR - they were nice, but I think they’ve changed the last for the recon (the 2.0 at least) compared to their last earlier shoes.
I have some recon 2.0, I think the sole is a good balance of stiffness and a little flex, I have gone away from having soles too stiff, I actually find having a little flex more comfortable.
I am not too keen of the single boa though, I don't find it evens the tension out well. I would probably go for the Velcro version which I think has the same sole, I think the recon 3.0 with the double boa would also be better for adjustment but is a stiffer sole.
2 rides in on some Recon 3.0s. To be honest, for the (horrendous) price, I'm not convinced.
I couldn't find anywhere to try the 3.0 on. Tried 1.0s in the right size, 2.0 in a size too big. As per MSP, I didn't feel like the single boa was a good answer which is why I went 3.0.
These are my first boa shoes and I'm struggling a bit with getting the tension right - these ones only ratchet up, so its easy to go too tight, then you have to release them fully and try and aim for one notch looser (yeah right!), rather than just being able to click back 1 notch.
Compared to my old Giro Terraduros, I've got more space around my toes, which is nice, but the heelcup is looser unless I ratchet them up proper tight which is just not nice. I'm not convinced the upper material is going to give over time and bed in to my foot shape.
Yes they have some flex in the toe, but its not where my foot bends so they feel quite clunky to walk in. The Giros were ace in this respect - really rigid, but the sole was heavily curved, so it rolled beautifully as you walk. Could (and did) wear them for hours and hours and hours, including on site at work.
One of the reasons I was interested in the Recons was the lack of mesh, I mean - we're in the UK - the last thing we need is MORE ways to let water into a bike shoe. My Giros were similarly perforated to the Recons and were pretty splash proof. The Recons ain't (you can see daylight through the little holes) and I got wet feet yesterday after not much splashiness.
it was the recon 1 i was looking at.
i dont want anything with Boa. 3 velcro straps is good for me.
i have some 10 year old BG sport, which are still going strong on the uppers, but the hard sold is a bit slippy.
I too replaced Terraduros with Recons, I got model with two Boa straps as single Boa did not keep heels in place.
Compared to Terraduros they are much lighter, feel like soles are quite a bit thicker and water enters them more easily.
The tongue is bit too stiff and long but the hook on upper Boa line is good at keeping in place. Flex on toe area is good and my heels stay in place, also the grip of the rubber sole is excellent.
I have some recon 2.0 (2 x pairs)
I rate them, did the Jennride in them which as you know Ton, consisted of quite a lot of walking 🙁
I have the Recon 1.0. Really like them. Nice and comfy. Use them on my turbo/gravel bike so have spent a lot of hours in them and they are very comfortable. Prefer them out on the road as well as you can still walk around in them. Can’t think of anything I don’t like about them.
I am not too keen of the single boa though, I don’t find it evens the tension out well.
I too have replaced terraduros with a recon 2.0 and also have this problem.
It sort of evens itself out after a few miles and needs another couple of clicks to tighten down again.
I do find them a bit tight across the top of the foot, but I’ve got weird shaped feet with narrow heels and wide toes.
Grip and weight are good.
