Hello all, still trying to decide exactly what road based bike I want. Narrowed it down to either the Specialized Allez E5 Elite or the Diverge E5 Elite. Both around the same price, with the Diverge downgrading 105 to Tiagra but adding disc brakes.

I had pretty much ruled out gravel/adventure due to the weight of my old one but just wondered, since these two are popular, if any one had compared the weights? Think I'm going Allez but could possibly switch if the difference isn't too huge.

Given that there's Tiagra disc road bikes out there around 10.5kg I wouldn't expect the Diverge to be much lighter, if at all.

Think the top of the range Allez (not the Sprint model) is around 9kg.

How much do you want discs?

I haven't weighed them but given that one is a pure road bike and the other is a gravel bike the pure road bike is going to weigh less. Do you need a gravel bike?

Are you using it for weekend fun rides or everyday commuting where you need mudguards and possibly panniers?

The Diverge will be noticeably heavier than the Allez . Really comes down to if it's pure road go Allez if you fancy a bit of light off road etc then go Diverge .

I've got a Diverge E5 comp. Not weighed it but the wheels it came with were like boat anchors, replaced with Prime race's which are a fair bit lighter. Its heavier than my non disc Giant Defy with Sora bits and bobs but not by much....

Does the Elite have the future shock though? I guess that adds weight to mine.

Wanna buy it 😉

I've got one of the first version DSW diverge with Tiagra.

With wheels on it's 9.96 kg (with speedplay pedals)

With wheels off 6.4 kg

Rear Wheel with 105 11-25 cassette 2 kg

Front Wheel 1.5 kg

Weights there abouts give or take a few grams.

It doesn't ride like it weighs 10kg and when the wheels finally want replacing it be with something lighter.

The other bike I was looking at was the Roubaix.

I got the dsw smartweld diverge 56cm (tiagra 2x10 trp Spyrs) and it was just over 10kg,

i changed the saddle, cassette, seatpost rotors/adaptors added m540 shimano pedals and it’s maybe 9.8-9.9kg now

My 2019 allez with shimano 105 , ksyrium elites and gp4000s weighs around 8.4kg with pedals in medium. It's not noticeably worse than my 7kg canyon ultimate, at a fraction of the cost. Cracking bike imo.

Don't think you can fit a proper mudguard on the front though despite them saying you can. Even my sks raceblades xl needed bodging to fit..be warned if you intend to fit guards.

Tpbiker - what's stopping you fitting guards?

I've had good results on my summer bike just bringing the guard up to the back of the fork crown, there's a product called 'Sheldon's Fender Nuts' that allow you to bolt guard bridge onto back of brake calliper nut.

Picking my Allez up soon, will give it a shot...

I sold my Allez to buy a Whyte Glencoe.

It is heavier but it is so much more comfortable and enjoyable to ride.

It will depend on your intended use.

I will likely never use the Glencoe in a gravel environment, maybe on a canal towpath.

On my Diverge A1 have swapped the original axis wheels for hunt wheels and gone 11 speed hydro on it and it feels a lot lighter, It may not be but it feels lighter to ride. The new wheels feel like they could be 1kg lighter, but I have no idea if this is a real fact.

Thanks for the replies all. Think you've made my mind up that the Allez would be the better bet.

I don't think I want it for anything other than road riding and even then probably only in reasonable weather at worst. Not been a roadie since a child but want to try it to hopefully get some miles in.

A new spanner have been chucked in the works though as I've just noticed the full carbon and 105 Cube Attain GTC has been discounted to within £100ish of the Allez and seems to get good reviews. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm!

The Cube Attain GTC Pro Disc is a nice bike, I got one of the last 2016 models from Rutland for ~£900 in May 2017, during a bank hol promo. Not been near that price since, best I've seen is ~£1069, best I can see today on a super quick google is https://www.paulscycles.co.uk/m7b0s6p8342/CUBE-ATTAIN-GTC-PRO-DISC-2017 .

Their sizing is a bit odd, I have a 58cm frame myself, ~178cm tall and ~83cm cycling inseam. In most brands I would be a ~56cm frame.

Just make sure you get one the right size, that more important than spec on a road bike.

Thanks guys. Mate at work has a 58cm Cube so will have a spin on that. Think I'll need the 60cm though.
