It's definitely me.

But B-Tension, seriously! With the top jockey 5mm from the 51t sprocket, I then end up with the a chain that's slacker than a wizards sleeve when in the 10t sprocket. I think the chain length is correct, just look at this pic when the suspension is fully compressed.

What am I doing wrong?

I'd be going a bit tighter than that.

I stick the chain in the 10t, set the chain length so its not flapping about, then stick it in the biggiest cog (45t on both bikes) and check full compressed, will shorten if I can get away with it.

It's not possible to tell from a photo if the chain is the right length, you say slack at the bottom out the cassette, what's that look like? (but even then, without actually knowing how you sized the chain, who knows.

Also, why would you be doing anything wrong? There's a lot of slack to take up between a 51t and 10t cog.

(I'm guessing there's a fair bit more forward range in that mech mind which would suggest too long)

I'd be more worried about all those gouges though.

Did you size the chain per the Shimano guide? Also, when you say 5mm from the jockey - are you lining the line on the jockey cage up with the top of the teeth on the biggest cog when in that gear?

I find my 12 speed xt works fine when clean but it’s very noisy when even slightly wet. I can’t tell if it’s about to skip gear or if that’s just the noise it makes. I’ll shortly be building up my ht again with gx 11 speed (which I don’t remember being so graunchy) so will be able to compare like for like then.

Running Shimano mech / shifter / cassette / chain, with a Shimano hg12 compatible front chainring. All boost spaced.

Could always shorten the chain a bit more, what's the likelihood of bottoming out when climbing a steep hill?

The chain length is 4+speedlink.
The B-Tension is set using the marker on the back of the mech when in the top sprocket.
However it is this slack when in the bottom sprocket.

That looks hella slack. 4 manual says 6 links at no load so if anything that should be too tight 🤔

I'd be checking the range of the mech then whipping a few links out of that.

Silly point but 4 links - you did add 4 links (eg 4 pins) not 8 (eg 4 pairs of plates) didn't you?

i had that problem when i used the old adage of calculating the chain length by wrapping it around front ring and big cog at the back plus 2 links - then Shimano doc said 5 or 6 links depending where the chain join, which was then much better.
