Haven't recently upgraded my old Technics amp to a luscious new Arcam A19 I've decided to follow suit and change me old B & W 601's
Ive listened to the newer b & W 685 at my dad's house - really like these, think I like the overall sound of b & W equipment. But I think I want to get some floorstanders. Room size is 5.6m x 5m sofa pulled out from the back wall by about 2ft.
Tried some Dali Zensor yesterday. Sounded ok but not any better than the 685's.
Dali Opticons - sounded much better than the smaller Zensor floorstanders but not really taken with the look of them.
Monitor audio bronze 5 - sounds better than the smaller Dali but not on par with the Opticons or even the smaller 685 IMO.
Then.
A set of Tannoy revolution xt6f. Wow, these were beautiful, had an amazing clarity and overall sounding control of the music. Was very impressed with them.
The shop unfortunately didn't stock B&W equipment, I'd like to hear them up against the small 685 and for a better comparison the floor standing 683's just trying to track down a shop with stick of both.
Anyone heard these back to back at all?
I've booked some time on Friday to hear the 683's and the 685 where I bought my amp from and before yesterday I was pretty certain I would walk away with the 683's!!
But those Tannoy's have got me thinking!
No one heard either of them?
It's all down to your ears. Tannoys tend to be brighter. Arcams can be a touch warm so depending on sources and cabling may level your system out nicely. Floorstanders especially if mass loaded in the base and spiked can be electrifyingly taut and have much more scope for proper staging than bookshelf speakers on stands.
My old rig of Audiology 8000A and Tannoys 633's with marantz 63se had it all. The timing was breathtaking. I always wondered if if have noticed any much benefit from an outboard DAC but what I had was so damn musical I didn't want to mess.
Take your own kit and tunes if demoing. Don't rely on shop amps, sources and cables. The room is already different. Introducing too many variables at once makes demoing hi-fi almost pointless unless you're looking for inspiration and prepared to do something expensive...
If Monitor Audio RS6's appeal I've just put mine up for sale. If you're anywhere local to Northamptonshire you're welcome to drop in and demo, whether to buy or just to play with toys for the sheer sake of it.
There's an ebay price, but I'd do something different for an STW'er. If it's of interest let me know and I'll send the ebay link
Reason to sell - I didn't get on with their sound (pretty energetic), and made the mistake of posting a thread to that effect on a hifi forum. Am now on track to buy a speaker twice as old, more than twice as big, for a hundred quid more.
