Title is provoke!!

For 18 months now i have been riding flats as they are super confidence inspiring on downs, recently a few riding mates have left em for dead on the ups when i used to be as good as them. I thought my fitness had disappeared, last night put my spds back on, how piss easy is it to climb techy bits fast and blast along the road!!

They make climbing so much easier, not a smuch fun down tho as i couldn't get my feet comfy 🙁 Feet also felt perched on my M540s!

Anyone agree or disagree?

Maybe you are fitter now? Just a thought.

Totally disagree it's for cheats. That's like saying disc brakes and suss is for cheats. Agree that climbing is easier, I don't see any XC racers riding flats, I've read spds are 30% more efficient uphill?

Horses for courses, I like both. Longer rides in SPD shoes are less knackering.

Me for one, I love a thigh burning climb.

I've switched from flats to SPD's, then back to flats, and back to SPD's again. Been using them for the past 3 years and now find flats real uncomfortable.
SPD all the time for everything! I loves 'em I do 🙂

I disagree. I'm much happier on the decnets when I'm clipped in.

I thought it was established - spds are for puffs, not cheats ?

Makes no odds for me on the descents clipped in or on flats, the SPDs are so much better on the ups though!

Always wondered why cycling gave me a sore bum!

50/50 on my bikes, riding SS on flats would be hard work if not impossible arround here*, but I find it really difficult to jump in SPD's**.

*short sharp climbs and stop start sections where the ability to put down a lot of force for a short time is nececary.

**or rather it's too easy so jump and I always overshoot or land with the rear wheel arround my ears.

I mugged my self off for so long, telling myself I prefer flats (even though I'd never tried spd's)

by far the single best thing I have upgraded.

peddling hard on the rough downs is one of the biggest things I found.

I have to admit I'm not as confident on the techy bits though

I'm with Onzadog. Unless it's uber steep / sketchy / scarey I'm happier clipped in on the downs.

The only point in downs is to get to the next climb. Anyone can call themselves a down hiller as evidenced by the number of weekend warriors who because they are fat and unfit call themselves downhillers as am excuse to walk up hill.same as many single speeders, it is an excuse for being unfit.

And yes I am well aware there are exceptions.

Unless you're a Bi-cyclist 🙂
It takes a while to gain confidence using SPD's. I used to unclip everytime that I thought I might have to stop, now I trackstand and rarely have to unclip.
Jumps, drops etc... all clipped in!
