You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
I've been using Giro Terraduros for ages, which have been ace, but old age caught up with them last autumn and I bought a hideously expensive pair of Spesh Recon 3.0 shoes to replace them.
However since day 1, I've had a fairly major issue with them, and after a winter of wearing my venerable MW80 boots and just swapping back to the Recons its bugging me yet more.
Basically the rubber of the outsole doesn't contact the body of the pedal (I bought new Shimano Trail SPDs at the same time as the shoes), so I'm standing on the cleat itself. This feels very unstable and unless I ratchet the release tension right up to the point where I struggle to get out, I get random unexpected releases when cornering where I'm throwing my weight around. (there's a mm or 2 of clearance between the rubber and the pedal body)
They also rattle on older, more worn pedals - I had thought about just using them for gravel, but the constant click/clack from the cleat moving in the pedal is irritating at best - especially when my ancient winter boots don't!
Having just had another look at them this morning, the midsole is also wearing very badly - there's a big groove developing behind the cleat, as all my weight is bearing there instead of on the outsole - it was this that killed off the Terraduros, as you get to the point you can't twist out with weight on the pedal, which caused a few pratfalls.
I probably should have sent them back after the first ride, but having fitted cleats to them, felt I was unable to do so. Not sure what to do, as I'm not enjoying riding in them, but can't afford to just write off such an expensive piece of kit.
This is the first time in 25+ years of using SPDs that I can recall having this issue!
Any thoughts...?
Thanks
I bought Recons to replace terraduros as well as you and experience all the same issues. In the meantime I've moved to Shimano ME7 as an immediate solution until I find something that I can replace the terraduros with long term.

I thought this was just me. I've reguated my Recons to longer XC rides although I'm beginning to get irritated by the tounge placement now which is rubbing on my upper foot. That and the constant click click is enough to drive me spare. Too expenisve to not use, I can't wait for them to wear out!
I've never found my sole contacts the platform part of any platform/SPD types (only used Shimano)
But if I didn't get on with a pair of shoes and couldn't send them back, I'd ebay em and cut my losses.
