i've changed my setup from 2x10 to 1x10, but i've used a dedicated 2x10 crank to do this.... (XT M785 if you're asking)

now, i know the chainline on a 2x crank isn't ideal for switching it to 1x (it makes a devil of a noise when in the easiest gear with even the slightest suggestion of a bit of filth back there) So can i use some spacers on the new 1x setup get get a perfect chain line?

if so, what thickness of spacer should i use?

ta 😀

EDIT: this would be to 'push' the chain ring towards to the frame.. does that make sense?!?

if you wanted to space it back to the midline of the cassette, you'd need 2.5mm (there's a 5mm gap between the chainrings, each are 2.5mm either side of the midline)

Or you could move a 2.5mm spacer from your BB from driveside to non-driveside, and move the whole chainset over.

But whatever you do, there's a good chance that it'll still be suboptimal / noisy when you're on the biggest rear cog, more so if you have a NW chainring. I have theories why
