I'm about to (I think) start building up a frame that ideally would be best with a 130+mm fork but for now I'm going to be using a 120mm travel.

Is there such thing as a spacer that will sit under the crown race to effectively increase the axle to crown length? It's a 1? straight steerer.

Cheers

Fit a larger wheel?

I'd not be happy fitting a spacer there.

Eventually plan is to go from 26 to 27.5 and therefore a new shock.

But for now wondering if there was another way to do it.

I've found this, but not in 56mm :/

Many years ago I swapped forks in an enduro bike. Had a "top hat" spacer/race made. The narrow bit was pressed into the frame where the bearing should have been. The wider bit was thus below the frame and held the bearing. In this case it was a much bigger bearing as well. Easy to make on a lathe.

Mattscm that sounds like what I want, was hoping someone made one.

I'll have to build it up without and see how it is.

Why wouldn't you just stick spacers under the stem? Your plan wouldn't slacken the angles that much would it?

on one used to make a +5 smoothie

specialised used to do it on their tricross range

more common than you would think.

how ever - sticking a spacer in it is not.... the over size taper area on the fork for the crown race is not that tall .... specific crownraces exist for a reason. you may never get the play out your headset if you just launch a spacer in there

Csb - because that won't change the head angle, it'll just raise the bars.

Cane Creek also do a +5 lower headset.
Chris King do a +5 crown race.

You can sometimes change the lower headset cup. I did this using a Cane Creek angleset - EC56 replacing ZS56.

My first thought is a lower headset cup with a really deep bit-that-goes-into-the-headtube and use a spacer to hold the whole cup out from the frame a little.

EDIT: Assuming it's an external headset.

Someone was selling a +5 headset on here a few weeks ago.

Pretty the only thing you can do is have a custom headset crown race that raises the front. Anything else is a bodge too far.

10mm is not a lot. Just use a spacer to raise your bars. Fork A to C lengths vary by as much as 10mm. Just adjust your sag a little or switch to a larger diameter tyre if you are really bothered but I really wouldn't stress over it.

It's 10mm, just pump the forks up a bit.

Rather than cocking about with spacers etc, why not build it up as it is and ride it first?
You'll probably find its fine.

I reckon it'll be about 5mm too low...

Aye, too much focusing on numbers.

Truth is there are so many factors you never truly know what angle you're running anyway.

Stick a smaller tyre on the rear or a bigger on the front will achieve the same result.

Don't know if it's the size you need, but Production Privee do such a spacer for their Shan GT for swapping between 29" and 27.5" wheels.

Cheers all, seems like there's not an easy off the shelf solution.

It's the cheap Brand X HT-01 that CRC sell. My plan was to steal parts from my old and too small Genesis Latitude and build it at first as a 26er - hence my concern that it's going to be too low with a 120mm 26 fork in it.

It's mainly to keep me entertained in the garage over the winter.

Ultimately it will get rebuilt as it should be with a new fork and 27.5 as and when cheap bits can be found.

That is exactly what I'm looking for... but I don't think it's the right size 😥

It's a 1 1/8 steerer at the moment with a 56mm headset.

Yep, I think that's it cheers.

So fit that in the bottom of the 56 tube and then send back my 56 headset and get something like this to fit in the extender https://www.evanscycles.com/cane-creek-40-series-is52-bottom-headset-EV144439

Or just an EC56? https://www.uberbikecomponents.com/view-product/Uberbike-1-18-to-15-Tapered-Headset-Ceramic-Bearings-Red

Not very common it seems and they don't list the bottom stack height, but it must be 10mm+ ??

What forks are they? You may be able to extend the travel without too much bother / cost.

Nope, I don't have anything yet. Frame is still in the post.

I don't even have it yet and needed to buy a headset so wanted to get the right one.

I've gone for that uberbike EC56 and will just build it with that. 😀
And then faff about with changing anything if I need to.

I put a +10mm Hope headset in one bike, worked exactly how you'd expect. And the angleset I have in now is +10 as well now I think of it.
