Looking for suggestions to expand my six year old's horizons on the bike. We live in the tweed valley and would like some reasonably local stuff. He can confidently descend the blue at glentress and has come down a couple of the reds (spooky wood, magic mushrooms), and we've done blues and freeride stuff at other trail centres a long way away (e.g. coed y brenin, comrie croft, laggan wolftrax). I need some ideas for other routes we could try. Are the blues at the other 7stanes any good? From what I can see written online about them they sound a bit... Boring? I'd quite like to get him on some natural stuff (just because that's my favourite style of riding) but I can't think of anything I've done that he would be able to ride.

Would the gypsy Glen route be too much?

Good thought. I think the descent would be fine but the ascent is looooooong the way I've always done it (from cardrona). I'm not sure if there's an easier way to ascend.

Well you could go up via Haystoun/Glensax estate , but it would a massive push up at the end. It is possible to be cycled but very very hard.

Recently did a combination of the Mabie blue and red with my eight year old and he had a hoot. We live in London and while he rides a lot on the road, he doesn’t do any mountain biking.

There are some really nice trails in Ladhope woods in Gala that I'm sure he'd be fine on.
There's not a huge amount of elevation either so makes getting back to the top of them pretty easy.
Drop us a PM if you want more details on where to park and stuff.

A bit of a travel but the blue and red trails in Canada Wood in Falkirk are good.

If you get a tow rope then you'll be able to pull him up the hills.

Another vote for Canada woods. Drumlanrig is very good too, with the trails having a more natural feel than most trail centres.

I've heard of these the legendary not-on-trailforks trails. Are they easy to find?

Newcastleton would be my suggestion.

Can't be that easy if someone hasn't managed to add them to Trailforks! 🤣

There's a reason they're not on trail forks.😉

Sounds like your 6 year old is riding well. You are highlighting a problem with Tweed Valley riding though, its not great for kids. We really do need some less more blues without big climbs. Generally speaking, you need to be a mountain biker to enjoy mountain biking in Tweed. Not enough intro or lower level stuff.

I'm a big fan of Angraflats over in Kelso for kids. Lots to entertain, small enough that they can ride off by themselves but still be in eyesight. A clever little trail centre that could/should be replicated elsewhere. A well worthwhile trip.

Yeah, I suspect there is, but my comment was more around the fact that anything that seems to resemble a trail gets added by 'someone' to Trailforks (whether the trail is actually on the ground or meant to be a secret)...it was intended as a joke for the people who are aware...
